Meet Ellen: Get the Key to Health & Happiness

Meet Ellen: Get the Key to Health & Happiness

    by

    Since Dec 13, 2016 19:05 UTC

I was given a copy of The Ministry of Healing at a health expo hosted by the Apollo Theater in Harlem on September 19, 2015, and the trajectory of my life has been forever changed. Now it’s time for YOU to meet Ellen and be transformed by the 8 Laws of Health outlined in The Ministry of Healing written by Ellen G. White and presented in the “Meet Ellen: Get the Key to Health & Happiness” podcast. I am Marci Kenon, IFPA-certified personal fitness trainer and lifestyle coach. In a previous life, I was a music journalist who contributed to Billboard magazine and interviewed giants including Diana Ross, Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin, Russell Simmons, Jay-Z and Daymond John. Those moments pale when compared to the privilege to introduce author Ellen G. White and her timeless health message delivered in The Ministry of Healing book, the focus of the Meet Ellen podcast. Ellen G. White, co-founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, wrote The Ministry of Healing over 100 years ago, and its pages continue to illuminate the path to health and healing today. This daily podcast (Monday-Friday) features every word of the book with commentary from a variety of experts on and enthusiasts of topics including spirituality, natural remedies, vegan diets, pharmaceutical drugs, addiction, ministry, family, natural resources, food supply/distribution and how they impact our lives. In the “Blue Zones” study conducted in 2004 to identify a demographic and/or geographic area of the globe where people live measurably longer lives, the Seventh-day Adventists of Loma Linda, CA were one of the five acknowledged “Blue Zones.” The way of life observed by these Adventists stems from biblical principles and the 8 Laws of Health presented by Ellen G. White in The Ministry of Healing. In 2014, Smithsonian Magazine named her one of “the 100 Most Significant Americans of All Time.” Much of the wisdom of the natural health movement today has its roots in the divinely-inspired writings of this eloquent and poetic woman with a third-grade education. With so much information about health, nutrition and exercise at our fingertips today, why are so many Americans suffering from lifestyle illnesses? Because change is simple, but it is NOT easy. We often go around and around the wilderness like the Israelites, never quite getting the victory we are promised. So as we venture through the treasure trove of wisdom in the pages of The Ministry of Healing and pick the brains of a host of esteemed guests, we will also provide evidence-based, actionable strategies to build new and edifying habits that lead to the transformation we all seek in different areas of our lives. Ellen G. White recognized that health goes beyond the body, mind and spirit; she offers guidance on dress, the home, rearing children and thriving in the workplace. It’s time to enter the Promised Land of peace that comes from living consistently in divine obedience. That truly is the KEY to health and happiness. This journey goes beyond the podcast. Go to the Meet Ellen website and join the Facebook group and newsletter. Get support, offer encouragement and keep abreast of live events including health expos and seminars where we can meet face-to-face. Until then, LIVE BETTER and DREAM BIGGER!

    The Sugarhouse

    The Sugarhouse

    by

    Since Oct 10, 2008 15:17 UTC

Autobiographical coming-of- age tale of five working class boys in the historic village of Cooperstown New York. The story centers around a local brothel called the Sugarhouse, operated by Ma Rutledge, the Maple Sugar Madam, and her two saucy, bovine daughters, Bertha and Emma. “The happiest times at the Sugarhouse came when Ma Rutledge was making maple syrup. During these sap-boiling days the sugary breath of the candy kitchen penetrated everywhere. The beds of the girls were saturated with sweetness. A roll in the hay with Emma or Bertha was like rolling in pastry flour.” But there’s trouble in paradise. A new girl arrives at the Sugarhouse, Belle Saint Marie, “a dusky Cajun princess with snapping black eyes and a body no man could ever forget once he’d seen it.” A lovers’ triangle develops, with tragic consequences for local hayshaker Paul Greenfield. “Guy DeWolfe and Belle Saint Marie were cut from the same cloth. That was obvious to everyone. The two of them were full of cayenne pepper. It was the French blood that surged in their veins. They were perfectly mated, like a pair of ocelots, hot-natured, highly strung, super-sexed and ferocious. Poor Paul Greenfield, who was easily the dullest man in Otsego County, simply didn’t stand a chance.” Twenty years later. The author returns to Cooperstown, having lost touch with his four childhood friends. What has become of them? And the Sugarhouse? “Supposing the whole town had been bulldozed away to make room for a strip mall, what one thing would I want to remain, to remain forever? Immediately I thought of the Sugarhouse. Yes, the Sugarhouse. Smash everything if you must, but don’t destroy the Sugarhouse. That was my prayer.”

This Country of Ours by Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall

This Country of Ours by Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall

    by

    Since Dec 22, 2023 00:00 UTC

History made interesting for young readers—This Country of Ours by Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall provides a simple and easy to comprehend way of looking at the history of the United States. Arranged chronologically in seven long chapters, it presents events in a story form, making them memorable and very different from other formats. One of the challenges that writers of history face is about fleshing out the characters and making the bland repetition of dates and dynasties seem relevant to modern day readers. Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall was a British writer who wrote several children’s books. Her most famous work is Our Island Story, a book of British history, which was considered to be the definitive children’s history of Britain for more than half a century. However, some of Marshall’s books may be found to be historically inaccurate, racially biased and often rely on mythology, legend and even Shakespeare as the source of material. This Country of Ours was published in the UK in 1917 and later was also reissued as The Story of the United States in 1919. It begins with a brief account of the Vikings and how they were the people who really discovered America, before the advent of Columbus. The story of Columbus and his famous expedition are thrillingly recounted along with stories of the English and French explorers who also sailed to the New World. New England, the Middle and Southern Colonies, the American War of Independence, the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln, the abolition of Slavery and finally the coming of World War I where the book ends make up the rest of the story. Apart from children, adults will also find it interesting to skim through as many of us have forgotten the details of our history lessons learned in school. Another important aspect is that This Country of Ours was written at a time when it was still fashionable to be patriotic! Today, we are so accustomed to having our great leaders’ lives ripped open to public scrutiny and very few of them have survived the onslaught of scandal and the loss of personal reputation. This Country of Ours takes us back to a more innocent era when the great figures of history were still role models for children to be emulated. As a general overview of American History, This Country of Ours is indeed a good book to read.
