Tommie Cool was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan – a legendary breeding ground for exceptional musical talent in all genres. With his father being one of the original members of the soul group Enchantment, Tommie developed a love and appreciation for the emotion and energy of a plethora of music genres. He showed an early interest in making music by learning to play the drums at the age of five. After graduating from Redford High School and Wayne State University, Tommie founded the now defunct hip-hop group The Shadow Clique. This gave him the opportunity to write, produce, arrange, and emcee hip hop compositions. Although that experience opened doors for him, his real passion was DJing. Tommie loved the style of Jam Master Jay, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Mix Master Ice and other turntable mavens of the time, and after buying his first set of turntables in 2001 he began to emulate some of their techniques. Even though hip-hop will always hold a special place for Tommie, he also developed a passion for techno and house music over the years, through listening to revolutionary Detroit DJ, Mojo. Drawing on the influences of some of his electronic music heroes such as Jeff Mills (The Wizard), Octave One, Kevin Saunderson, Robert Hood and Derrick May, Tommie has made his home DJing in some of Detroit’s well-known venues. Tommie Cool has held residencies at The Mars Bar in Hamtramck, Coaches Corner and Pulse Lounge in Downtown Detroit. He has also played at The Works, TV Lounge, Motor City Wine and Jacoby’s German Beirgarten. His rising profile has also afforded him the chance to share the stage with some of the electronic music’s finest DJs and producers including Jeff Mills (The Wizard), DJ Minx, Los Hermanos, and Pirahnahead. A large part of Tommie’s appeal is his knowledge and appreciation for so many genres of music. He is able to blend all styles of music from jazz to techno to broken beat. With his continued success as a DJ and his desire to produce more music, there is no doubt that Tommie Cool is poised to become another exceptional musical talent from Detroit. [itunes pic]

Every event you have ever attended has rested on the shoulders of an event planner — nay, a superhero of organization and patience. Our show aims to bring those planners and their stories to you in a personal setting. We choose guests who have navigated challenges in a way that will inform and inspire you. Our host is Michael Kranitz, CEO of Eventsquid.com who is an author, lawyer, and former radio host and stand-up comedian. The best event planners are the ones who have taken the challenges of our times in stride and in fact leverage them to create unique experiences we never thought of. We have two such guests with us today: Dr. Nance Wilson from SUNY Cortland and Dr. Thomas Wolsey of the American University in Cairo. They are the co-creators of Beyond the App: Cause and Conference, which strives to support teachers’ professional development and coach literacy experts in one of the most creative ways possible in response to COVID, and their model may just change the game. I’m looking forward to hearing them go more in-depth about what they do and how to leverage technology to give a face-to-face experience. [00:01 – 04:37] Opening Segment I welcome and introduce Dr. Nance Wilson and Dr. Thomas Wolsey Beyond the APP Dr. Wilson and Dr. Wolsey gives background about the app The why good professional development Global connection Not just a conference Connecting people all over the world [04:38 – 17:44] How to Leverage Technology to Give a Face to Face Experience Dr. Nance talks about the event’s goal and outcomes As close to face to face as could be Representing many nations How they achieved the effect Limiting the number of attendees per session 30 to 40 Allowing for informal conversations Separating by grades and professions Addressing the issue of people tuning out Experts creating value for specific areas Engagement experts teaching engagement Finding the right people based on need Attacking the problem of providing individual feedback Using breakout rooms Using the right tools in conjunction with understanding Leveraging technology [26:23 – 27:47] Beyond the App: Digital Tools and Strategies for Teachers and Students Feedback from practitioners Examples of email feedback from guests Dr. Wolsey’s and Dr. Wilson’s perspective on going back to the old ways Greater use of online technology and awareness Keep exploring online Using technology to leverage individual review The importance of digital literacy Now more than ever students need to know how to use technology How technology connects to literacy and operating effectively How Beyond the App is giving the tools and resources to teachers to adapt [27:48 – 33:25] Closing Segment Trying to get digital literacy into mainstream thinking The next event and how it’s supported Another conference coming up Looking for sponsors How to reach out to Dr. Wilson and Dr. Wolsey Links below Final words Tweetable Quotes: “We wanted them to know that they weren’t alone in the things that were causing them to struggle and we wanted them to know that people whose books they read… are also people they can talk and work together with.” – Dr. Thomas Wolsey “It’s about leveraging the technology that’s out there to think about, ‘Well, what could this do for me that would be better and or different and would allow me to have similar quality practices that I had in the face to face?’” – Dr. Nance Wilson “To function in the current world, students need digital literacy skills and strategies.” – Dr. Nance Wilson You can learn more about Dr. Nance and Dr. Thomas and what they do by visiting https://www.beyondtheappliteracy.com/ (https://www.beyondtheappliteracy.com/).
