    Humanities Matter by Brill

    Humanities Matter by Brill

    by

    Since Jan 10, 2020 19:00 UTC

With the challenges the world is facing today, the humanities and social sciences are needed and more relevant than ever to help us understand what it means to ‘lead a good life’. The authors and editors, with whom Brill collaborates, dedicate their academic life to asking critical questions on globalization, the rise and fall of societies, migration, the functioning of our democracies, the history of conflicts and international relations, inequality, water security or climate change, to name just a few. In this year’s article we let our authors and editors explain – from their personal perspectives – why it is crucial for society to continue investing in research in the humanities and social sciences. They give us a glance into their field of research, individual work, methodologies and motivation, and they demonstrate why the humanities have been and will remain a vital pillar of academia and society.

    Projecting Artlies into the Void

    Projecting Artlies into the Void

    by

    Since Jan 17, 2008 00:13 UTC

In 2006, Land Arts of the American West was asked to create an ARTL!ES ‘archive’ at Cabinetlandia, a borrowed piece of land near Deming, New Mexico. The site is part of the Deming Ranchettes, desert scrubland throughout Luna County that was speculatively divided into 87,000 half-acre residential lots and sold in the 1960s. Bound by a major east-west railroad to the north, the voided subdivision containing our site is bisected by Interstate 10. Its original dirt roads have become faint shadows tracing property lines across an expanse of open horizon. This seemingly empty Chihuahuan Desert basin appears as a zone to traverse on your way between places. Void is the essential character of this place. Its transient nature and the ambulatory mode of Land Arts investigation prompted a dispersed response to the project. Instead of making a static container, our goal was to locate the actual issues within the landscape and archive the stories, or lies, returned in that exchange. After considerable difficulty with the weather and local site conditions, we spent three days distributing the printed history of ARTL!ES in and around Deming—finding, and being found by, people willing to talk. Through this process unpredictable events ensued, like the invitation of the Kretek twins, ranching sisters in there seventies, for our entire crew of seventeen to join them for an evening at the Rio Mimbres Country Club. Before dinner, Geraldine and Gertrude’s good friend ‘Hawk,’ a lifelong cowboy and circus performer, treated us to a rope trick demonstration—in the dining room. Once all the issues were located, the recorded stories were edited and compiled for broadcast on the site. A portable tower was built to project ARTL!ES into the void; to broadcast the stories of Deming into the desert, towards the passing traffic, and back into the landscape that produced them.

Audio archive of the first fifty-one issues of ARTL!ES created through an exchange of journals for stories from people in and around Deming, New Mexico, 6-11 October 2006.

Produced under the direction of Chris Taylor by Land Arts of the American West.

Final audio editing by George Morrow.

    How I Hustle

    How I Hustle

    by

    Since Jan 21, 2020 14:25 UTC

Her Hustle was founded in 2019 because we felt frustrated by the lack of information around lofty job titles and confusing job specs. We are all under so much pressure to carve out a dream career, yet the advice we are given from school to university is just so bad, and seldom are we given the opportunity to learn about the breadth of jobs out there, nor what they actually entail on a day-to-day basis.

So we set out to create the career platform we’ve both needed, and build a supportive community for ambitious women looking for inspiration and insight as they build their careers. Through our panel events and ‘How I Hustle’ podcast, we’re speaking to women across a range of different industries, and at all different stages of their career, finding out what it really means to do what they do, how they got there, and how they get it all done.

Whether you’re just starting out in your career, looking to change job or industry, or you just want a bit of career inspiration for what you’re currently doing, Her Hustle is for you.

    Reporting: Depp v Heard

    Reporting: Depp v Heard

    by

    Since Apr 8, 2022 15:42 UTC

Nick Wallis was the first journalist to break the news that Johnny Depp had lost his libel claim against NGN at the High Court in London in July 2020. That hadn’t been the plan. When Nick started live tweeting the case from within the courtroom he became the inside track for interested followers around the world. Now Nick is travelling to Virginia to see if he can follow the second instalment of this extraordinary confrontation. Nick will be recording outside the court (no electronic devices are allowed inside the courtroom on this occasion!), speaking to those around him, and summarising each day’s proceedings in a daily edition of this podcast. In the middle of this trial will be 10 days of live examination and cross-examination of the two famous faces at the centre of this case. A jury will ultimately decide the outcome, but this podcast will be your daily digest from the courtroom in the celebrity trial of the century. Reporting Depp v Heard is presented by Nick Wallis. Fights Like A Girl

    by

    Since Oct 8, 2019 17:11 UTC

At times women in society are perceived as weak, overlooked and unvalued. Big Fridge and GQ challenge this concept, as they are 2 tenacious characters that were raised by a family full of women. You will get a podcast where you’ll have a street prospect as well as a college outlook, which share philosophical and intellectual paradigms that transpire into modern and or traditional ways thinking. A convicted felon and a holder of a master’s degree will tackle current events, while upholding influences of past history that utilize theory, so they may potentially come to a common consensus Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/fights-like-a-girl/support
