Sumu is a front-line worker with the Canadian government and has over 15 years of experience in community leadership and public speaking. She is very passionate about helping women of colour create influential personal brands, by addressing the systemic or cultural barriers they may be facing. Sumu is the founder of Ms. Brown Plus, a body-positive movement for women. She has her B.Sc from the University of Toronto and currently in her final year of Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Manitoba. Her community work has been featured in NOW Toronto, Toronto.com, and Toronto Star. Some of her achievements include interviewing politicians like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynn, Toronto Mayor John Tory, and many other community changemakers. As a result of her passion for media and community building, she has produced over 100 videos online, and directed a documentary in Srilanka during her placement as a Leadership Facilitator. Sumu was nominated for the 2019 Waterfront Awards under the Outstanding Innovator category. Dr. Jill explains why our existing policies and programs are not designed to protect these groups and how she is advocating for change. This episode will also shed light on how racism continues to play a role in many sectors such as education, healthcare, social services, housing and others while we are trying to deal with a health crisis. How can communities move forward during this time? This episode is definitely for individuals who are looking to create change in their communities. She not only addresses the issues faced by marginalized communities but also shares encouraging words for advocates and activists to keep fighting for what is right.
