We Are the Voices Radio is pleased to present inspiring poetry readings and edifying conversations, recorded this past fall and in spring and summer 2020. The episodes included in this series feature the voices of nationally prominent activists, scholars, poets, and more. We offer these episodes in the hope that they will contribute to our listenersâ well-being and self-reflection, and will heighten their awareness, and move them to action. âWe Are the Voicesâ is a Mellon Foundation Higher Education and Scholarship in the Humanities-funded project that forges an alliance between arts, literature, and public humanities. We are housed at Mills College in Oakland, CA, which sits on the ancestral and unceded land of the Ohlone people. This land acknowledgment serves as just a starting point for accountability and for actions to support indigenous organizations and change movements.

Sharing our survivor stories from Breast cancer gives us a voice in a voiceless system and helps equip others diagnosed how to fight the Battle Ahead. As we share we help others know how to fight, how to find hope, and how to advocate for themselves along the way. It helps you know that you can fight and do hard things too! As a survivor I found the health system left me feeling unheard, unseen, and dismissed. I turned to the internet to find the answers I didn’t get from my health team. I found very little outside from medical facilities. This led me on the journey to give back and provide what I was searching for. What better way to know how to fight than to hear from others warriors who fought and won! It will look different for each person facing Breast Cancer, but you will not be alone. Connect with me on all other social media platforms as well.

Design is Not Neutral is a podcast built from a thesis project. As a present design master’s student at the University of Notre Dame, I began a broader inquiry into the way design as a field was built and the way we now teach design. After doing more research, it became clear – that design in the United States has a diversity problem. The roots of our diversity issue are squarely in how we define and teach Graphic Design. Graphic Design was made for white, cis-gendered, able-bodied men in consumer-driven societies. With this foundation, how we determine what is âgood designâ has become extremely exclusionary. Yet, despite increased conversation around equity, design education has yet to dramatically change. The designers and design educators interviewed on Design is Not Neutral have all deeply researched the field of design education in order to improve our field. This podcast will not only provide listeners with resources on how to challenge their own perceptions of what design has been defined by, it will also provide concrete examples of how this work is being done in classrooms. I hope you enjoy each conversation as much as I did and if you liked Design is Not Neutral please check us out on Instagram.

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway follows a group of American and British expatriates traveling from Paris to Pamplona, Spain, for the running of the bulls. The novel centers on Jake Barnes, a war veteran unable to consummate his love for the beautiful and charismatic Lady Brett Ashley. As they navigate love, disillusionment, and the aimlessness of the post-war “Lost Generation,” their relationships become strained by jealousy, alcohol, and unfulfilled desires. Hemingwayâs crisp, understated prose captures the beauty of Spain, the excitement of bullfighting, and the emotional emptiness of his characters, making this a timeless exploration of lost ideals. The Game of Thrones Podcast to Help You Sleep | Game of Drones is a GoT podcast that’s part bedtime story and part high school class you can’t stay awake for. Don’t watch “Game of Thrones”, don’t worry this will put you to sleep anyway.
First published in 1894, this wonderful travelogue by a famed naturalist and conservationist still remains a book that delights and informs its readers. The Mountains of California by John Muir recounts the author’s exploration of the Yosemite Valley, Mount Whitney, the famed sequoia forests and King’s Canyon among other places of immense natural beauty. Written in his characteristic zestful style, with a deep understanding and respect for nature, the book is a treasure trove of geography, geology, botany, biology and sheer love of the magical planet we live in. His descriptions of the flora, fauna and magnificent scenery around him are amazing word pictures that bring this fabulous landscape to life for the reader. John Muir was of Scottish-American origin and one of the first environmentalists who believed in preserving nature above the claims of trade and commerce. He believed that we human beings must save the wilderness and habitat of others we share this earth with. Some of his writings have had a deep and lasting impact on modern ecological and environmental studies and he is today widely regarded as one of the patron saints of this branch of philosophy. His considerable body of work includes letters, essays, books, writings on Nature and conservation and also several important academic works. There are many monuments in America in his memory, including the famous John Muir hiking trail in the Sierra Nevada mountains, the John Muir College, the Muir Woods National Park etc. His mission was to raise the consciousness of the ordinary person on the street so that they could recognize the importance of living in harmony with their environment and prevent them from sinking into complete materialism and disaster. In The Mountains of California, Muir recounts his visits to the Cascades Peaks â Mt St Helens and Mt Shasta. The original edition includes some wonderful illustrations of trees, glaciers, insects, plants and several maps of the Yosemite Valley. His intrepid mountaineering skills, the hardships he endured in this harsh and lonely landscape, punctuated only by crystal clear lakes and wonderful native species of plants and animals are described with great skill in the book. His early views on destruction of indigenous species and their transformation into orchards and pastures for domestic animals are well documented here. His lyrical descriptions of the Golden Gate through the Central Valley of California, the fathomless canyons and chasms, the valley where the California Gold Rush took place and above all the splendid stands of pine trees of different varieties make this book an interesting and delightful read for young and old readers alike.
