A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains by Isabella L. Bird

A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains by Isabella L. Bird

    by

    Since Dec 11, 2023 00:00 UTC

Isabella Bird began travelling while in her early twenties to help alleviate illness that had plagued her since childhood. She was a single woman in her early forties when she made her treck through the Rocky Mountains. A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains details this fascinating account of her travels through a series of letters written to her sister, Henrietta. These letters are filled with beautiful, vivid descriptions of the scenery, the people she encountered, the way of life, and a mountain man named Jim Nugent, that was as rough as they come, but a complete gentleman with Ms. Bird. She has the distinction of being the first woman to become a member of the Royal Geographical Society in 1892.

    Damon Runyon: Comedy and Drama

    Damon Runyon: Comedy and Drama

    by

    Since May 8, 2023 10:57 UTC

The “Damon Runyon Theater” was a popular radio show that aired from 1949 to 1950, based on the stories of famed journalist and author Damon Runyon. The show featured a mix of comedy and drama, with each episode exploring the colorful characters and underworld of New York City in the early 20th century.

The show’s host, Broadway actor John Brown, introduced each episode and provided commentary on the characters and events portrayed in the stories. The show’s writing was known for its clever dialogue and use of slang, reflecting the distinctive style of Runyon’s writing.

The show’s most famous character was undoubtedly Nathan Detroit, a small-time gambler and hustler who appeared in several episodes. Other memorable characters included Harry the Horse, Nicely-Nicely Jones, and Rusty Charley, all of whom were brought to life by talented voice actors.

The “Damon Runyon Theater” was a beloved show that captured the essence of Runyon’s unique voice and style. Its influence can be seen in later works like the musical “Guys and Dolls,” which was based on several of Runyon’s stories and characters. The show’s legacy continues to this day, as fans of classic radio drama continue to enjoy its colorful characters and witty writing.

    The Devil You Don’t Know

    The Devil You Don’t Know

    by

    Since Sep 28, 2021 00:33 UTC

A podcast that explores the historical and cultural relevance of the figure known as the Devil. For many, The Devil is an entity not to be trifled with. He (most often it is a “he” pronoun) has an aim to tempt you away from God. For others, The Devil is a fictitious character carefully designed as propaganda; a scare tactic for the faithful.

The consequences of this belief around The Devil have been severe. Antisemitism, the crusades, the inquisition, the witch trials, the Satanic Panic, and even today there is Q’Anon. The Devil is VERY real to many people and in this podcast we will look into how this came to be. You already know The Devil You Know. We are uncovering The Devil You DON’T Know.

Today Emily is THRILLED to discuss Justin. Strap in as we talk about several people that have no last names and how Christianity’s polarizing worldview threatened second century world peace.

This is Chapter 5: Satan’s Earthly Kingdom – Christians Against Pagans, in the book: The Origin of Satan: How Christians Demonized Jews, Pagans, and Heretics, by Elaine Pagels.
