    Cleopatra by Jacob Abbott

    Cleopatra by Jacob Abbott

    by

    Since Dec 22, 2023 00:00 UTC

The French mathematician and philosopher, Blaise Pascal once remarked, “Cleopatra’s nose. Had it been shorter, the whole face of the world would have been changed!” Such was the legendary power and attraction of this most famous woman ruler that generations of artists, readers, writers, historians and poets have ensured that she remains immortal and unforgettable. Jacob Abbott’s Cleopatra is a work of historical biography, told in a highly dramatic and gripping style. It brings the characters and the circumstances to vivid life, making it an entertaining read for people of all ages. The authentic rendering of ancient Rome, Egypt and the famous characters who played their part in this ancient drama are wonderfully depicted. The romance, betrayal, war, hatred, destruction, murder, the power and the glory of empire are all captured in this sweeping narrative. Abbot’s brief preface gives a glimpse of how much this fabulous queen has indeed altered the course of human lives. Cleopatra’s history is portrayed in great detail. The book opens with the lines, “The story of Cleopatra is a story of crime” and frankly speaks of the incestuous practices that existed in ancient Egypt. The queen was by birth an Egyptian but the blood of her Greek ancestors flowed in her veins. Abbot describes the land of Egypt in glowing terms and ascribes many of Cleopatra’s faults to the luxury and surrounding she was brought up in. The mighty dynasty of the Ptolemies, the fabled city of Alexandria, Cleopatra’s ascent of the throne as a blooming young lass of fifteen, her marriage and exile, the circumstances under which she meets Julius Caesar, their relationship and Caesar’s assassination in Rome are all the stuff of legend. Today, most students of history and literature would be familiar with many aspects of the story. Shakespeare himself famously dealt with it in his Antony and Cleopatra, poets and musicians depicted her almost unbelievable power over men, while historians have undertaken serious research into all these claims. However, the lady has, centuries after her tragic and spectacular suicide, remained an enigma. Jacob Abbot wrote primarily for children. In Cleopatra, he presents history not in the usual vapid, dull way, but in a manner that makes the events come alive, thus making them memorable and interesting for children and adults alike. As a biography that attempts to solve the riddle of Cleopatra’s amazing life and times, this is indeed a fascinating read.

    That Green Dress Podcast

    That Green Dress Podcast

    by

    Since Jun 1, 2021 22:41 UTC

A Podcast For Living Your Engaged and Joyful Life That Green Dress is a podcast for women just like you. Women who have found this moment of loss, invisibility, confusion, a lack of motivation or inspiration, or even an increase in self-doubt that’s paralyzed us from the living the life we know we deserve. The truth is, every environment, be it a workplace, home, a relationship, can leave us challenging our beliefs, our worth, and our value – am I doing enough professionally, being enough as a community member, I am attractive enough for my partner, am I making enough healthy meals for my kids…you know, doing ALL the things. You may have your own version of a green dress, maybe your narrative is that you are a mom in the throws of motherhood and you’ve lost your femininity and identity and you want it back. Perhaps you are entering your second or third career in life and want your experience and history to be valued. Entering the workforce with a degree in hand only to realize the job wasn’t what you imagined. Perhaps you’ve lost your joy and you want to find it… I want to invite you back into the person you were designed to be by helping you tune in and turn up the volume on your abilities, talents and gifts. Walking back into the engaged life meant that I had to revisit the woman I was from the very beginning. The engaged life gives you validation, and opens you up to encouragement and support from other women navigating through the same territory as you. When we run alone and empty we reject spaces to get quiet, reflect and imagine because they feel uncomfortable. I want to help you cultivate that space again where you can dream, imagine again. That Green Dress Podcast is going to open you up for functional alone time and rejuvenating relationships at the same time. Join me each week championed, energized, renewed, and ready to come out of isolation into the community with other women and ready to live your most engaged life. As a woman you may feel like you’re tirelessly trying to achieve a sense of belonging and acceptance in your home and work life. In order to do that you’re often “turning down” the things that make you who you really are for the acceptance of other people. This may have led to a muted and tired version of who you were designed to be. I want to invite you back into the person you were designed to be by helping you tune in and turn up the volume on your abilities, talents and gifts. Walking back into the engaged life meant that I had to revisit the woman I was from the very beginning.
