Hill of Dreams, The by MACHEN, Arthur

Hill of Dreams, The by MACHEN, Arthur

    by

    Since Jan 1, 1970 00:00 UTC

The novel recounts the life of a young man, Lucian Taylor, focusing on his dreamy childhood in rural Wales, in a town based on Caerleon. The Hill of Dreams of the title is an old Roman fort where Lucian has strange sensual visions, including ones of the town in the time of Roman Britain. Later it describes Lucian’s attempts to make a living as an author in London, enduring poverty and suffering in the pursuit of art. Generally thought to be Machen’s greatest work, it was little noticed on its publication in 1907 save in a glowing review by Alfred Douglas. It was actually written between 1895 and 1897 and has elements of the style of the decadent and aesthetic movement of the period, seen through Machen’s own mystical preoccupations. – Summary by Wikipedia

    by

    Since Dec 1, 2022 01:00 UTC

There are so many ways to live a life and this podcast is testament to that! Our conversations are honest, fun, reflective and interesting and we hope to inspire our listeners who may be a bit stuck in their work or life to stop and think about what they really want in life – to create “some elbow room”. Specifically, to put some time aside to really think about: (1) How their current job suits their personality (2) The impact it is having on their own wellbeing & happiness and (3) The influence it is having on the relationships most important in their life. Our guest’s stories unfold key moments of change. Often influenced by their work, we talk about how those changes have impacted their lives. Whether our guest recognised an opportunity or had a plan, said yes instead of no or just fell on their feet – their lives often turned for the better! We also discuss how being part of a group or community is important to feeling that sense of belonging and how much belonging influences one’s happiness and wellbeing. This podcast may even inspire you to seek it out if you don’t have it in your life. Our guests show there are many ways to live a life and finding a balance between ambition, hard work and fun is the place to be! This is what we explore from all directions and more on the “Some Elbow Room” podcast. Enjoy!
