A Year of Listening Podcast is designed to reclaim the lost art of civil, compassionate, and nuanced conversation about a variety of polarizing topics. In short, we’re tackling all the topics your mother warned you not to discuss at cocktail parties. The goal of this show is to help people understand the very personal experiences that often guide our beliefs in the hopes that this expands our compassion and empathy for those who believe differently than us. I have no doubt that in every episode a listener will hear something with which he wholeheartedly disagrees. But, I also believe that if one keeps listening, he will also hear something with which he agrees. It is my hope that the conversations in this podcast will give listeners opportunities to keep listening, to practice empathy and to widen the narrow holds we have on our own perspectives to make room for someone else’s.

“Watch out for the Hidden Things…” That’s the last thing Calliope Jenkin’s best friend and former lover says to her before ending a 2 A.M. phone call from Iowa, where he’s investigating a case she knows little about. Five hours later, she gets another call, this time from the police. Josh has been found dead; foul play is suspected. Calliope is stunned. Especially when Josh leaves a message on her phone a few hours later. Spurred by grief and suspicion, she heads to Iowa herself, accompanied by a road-weary stranger who claims to know something about what happened to Josh and who can – maybe – help Calli get him back. The road is not quite the straight shot she imagined. Josh was involved in something a lot more complicated than a teenage runaway or deadbeat dad, and Calliope find herself on a surreal road trip into – and behind – America’s heartland, hounded by once-magical creatures twisted by living too long just out of sight and the bogeymen in Calliope’s own troubled past.

Stories to Read, Words to Know, Level D contains 12 meaningful stories that connect to students’ lives. Students are engaged by the charming illustrations and encouraged by the simple stories that help them build confidence while they increase their English vocabulary. The Stories to Read, Words to Know audio component contains two types of readings: 1) a Read Along and 2) an Echo Reading. Learners listen to the Read Along and follow along silently in their books. The Read Along, read by a skilled adult reader, models pronunciation and intonation and guides learners through the story with a bell that indicates when to turn the page. The Echo Reading is read by a skilled adult reader one sentence, phrase, or paragraph at a time and is echoed by student readers. The learner joins in echoing in unison with the student readers. Participating in an Echo Reading helps learners to gain confidence while reading aloud, supports them in reading material that may be too difficult to read independently, and provides practice with proper phrasing and expression.
