Welcome to the DIY Home Builder Podcast! This show is dedicated to the intrepid Owner-Builder. That rare breed of individual who shucks convention and embarks on a journey to build their own home acting as the general contractor. Listen in as we interview other owner builders, industry professionals and our friends and family, to share their stories and insights regarding building houses and increasing their net worth at the same time. There are a million reasons why you might want to build your own home. The pride of creating something with your own hands, the flexibility to design what you really want, the opportunity to learn new skills and trades – the list goes on! For many of us though, one important reason is to be able to have a custom home that we can actually afford. Building it yourself can save you 25% (or more) off the cost to buy an equivalent home or have someone else build it for you. However there is definitely a learning curve when it comes to knowing how to capitalize on those cost savings. This podcast and its accompanying website were created to help flatten that learning curve and give you the tools, resources and knowledge necessary to start you on your journey to building your dream home. Whether you are acting as your own contractor and hiring subs or doing the labor yourself, we’ll take you from start to finish on managing a new build; from securing a construction loan to scheduling and sourcing materials and ultimately building on your future.

DARK SISTERS is a new American opera, with music by Nico Muhly and libretto by Stephen Karam. Co-commissioned and Co-produced by Gotham Chamber Opera, Music-Theatre Group and Opera Company of Philadelphia. DARK SISTERS is a suspenseful, emotional, and lyrical depiction of one woman’s struggle with life and faith and the universal dilemma of whether to stay or leave. The opera opens a window into the lives of Eliza and her sister wives, members of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), a polygamous sect based in the southwestern United States. Creators Muhly and Karam have drawn inspiration from the crush of media attention surrounding two of the many raids on FLDS compounds (the 2008 raid at the Yearning for Zion Ranch in Eldorado, TX and the 1953 raid at Short Creek, AZ), as well as from the stories of the more than 80 wives of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. Our Soundcloud page will feature interviews with the opera’s creative team and historian Ken Verdoia, giving insights into the background of DARK SISTERS and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a new opera. Final workshops begin on September 6, 2011. World Premiere from November 9 to November 19, 2011, at the Gerald Lynch Theater at John Jay College.
