The Story of a Common Soldier of Army Life in the Civil War, 1861-1865 by Leander Stillwell

The Story of a Common Soldier of Army Life in the Civil War, 1861-1865 by Leander Stillwell

    by

    Since Dec 8, 2023 00:00 UTC

Leander Stillwell was an 18-year-old Illinois farm boy, living with his family in a log cabin, when the U.S. Civil War broke out. Stillwell felt a duty “to help save the Nation;” but, as with many other young men, his Patriotism was tinged with bravura: “the idea of staying at home and turning over senseless clods on the farm with the cannon thundering so close at hand . . . was simply intolerable.” Stillwell volunteered for the 61st Illinois Infantry in January 1861. His youthful enthusiasm for the soldier’s life was soon tempered at Shiloh, where he first “saw a gun fired in anger,” and “saw a man die a violent death.” Stillwell’s recounting of events is always vivid, personal, and engrossing. “I distinctly remember my first shot at Shiloh . . . The fronts of both lines were . . . shrouded in smoke. I had my gun at a ready, and was trying to peer under the smoke in order to get a sight of our enemies. Suddenly I heard someone in a highly excited tone calling to me from just in my rear, –’Stillwell! Shoot! Shoot! Why don’t you shoot?’ I looked around and saw that this command was being given by . . . our second lieutenant, who was wild with excitement, jumping up and down like a hen on a hot griddle. ‘Why, lieutenant,’ I said, ‘I can’t see anything to shoot at.’ ‘Shoot, shoot, anyhow!’ ‘All right,’ I responded. . . And bringing my gun to my shoulder, I aimed low in the direction of the enemy, and blazed away through the smoke. But at the time the idea to me was ridiculous that one should blindly shoot into a cloud of smoke without having a bead on the object to be shot at.” The Story of a Common Soldier is a compelling coming of age tale that will appeal not only to Civil War buffs but to anyone who enjoys autobiographies. Written at the urging of his youngest son, when Stillwell was a mature man–a lawyer, judge, and member of the Kansas legislature, it combines graphic detail (provided by his war diary and letters written at the time to his family) with the insights of a thoughtful man looking back on those horrific times.

Many people go through life accepting the serendipitous opportunities that coincidentally appear. This may be a blessed life but it’s very different from declaring an unprecedented future into existence now. Being able to have a clear vision for how you want your life to show up provides the power needed to create your reality.

    Tricks of the Rich

    Tricks of the Rich

    by

    Since Aug 26, 2020 00:00 UTC

This podcast is all about what RICH people know that NORMAL people don’t…YET. We are two women – in our mid-forties, but who’s counting – who suffer from financial FOMO, and we’re not going to take it any more! We’re smart. We work hard. We follow the rules we were taught growing up. So why don’t we feel successful or secure? Why do we still feel “behind,” or like we’re never going to fulfill our American dreams? What are we missing?? What do rich people know that we don’t? We hear they know how to make “MONEY work for THEM.” Were we absent the day they taught that in school?? We’re still working for money! But we’re determined to catch up, by interviewing – grilling, really – the kind of professionals that rich people rely on to achieve and sustain wealth and financial security. Why should the rich get all the help? We weren’t born with membership, so we’re going to hustle and learn our way into the “rich people club.” We want to help people achieve financial security and empowerment by providing accessible, real-world advice from the professionals that rich people use. (Don’t wait to “become” rich. Do what rich people do, NOW, to know what they know, and – if you want it – get what they have.) We’re encouraging people to be positive, intentional, and proactive. For people who didn’t grow up in wealthy families, and those who don’t feel entitled to wealth or financial security, or people who believe they won’t ever understand it…money is a bit of a mystery. “The rich are different from normal people.” Our podcast SHARES what rich people know that “normal people” don’t, so more people feel empowered to take action to achieve the security and freedom that money can provide.

Ten Days in a Madhouse by Nellie Bly

Ten Days in a Madhouse by Nellie Bly

    by

    Since Dec 26, 2019 00:00 UTC

Long before Christiane Amanpour, Frances Fitzgerald and Martha Gellhorn blazed a trail in courageous investigative journalism, a pioneering and intrepid writer and journalist whose pen name was Nellie Bly opened up a whole new field in what had previously been a strictly male domain. Ten Days in a Madhouse was published as a series of articles in the New York World during 1887. Nellie Bly was given the assignment by her editor to have herself committed to an insane asylum in New York with a “view to writing a plain and unvarnished narrative of the treatment of patients therein and the methods of management…” She was to feign insanity and get herself legally declared insane, pass the test conducted by the doctors and get committed. She was to chronicle her experiences and write a report that revealed everything that she went through in the asylum. It was not an easy decision to make and Nellie herself had doubts about the fact that once she was declared insane, her editors would hardly be in a position to get her out! Ten Days in a Madhouse received a sensational response. Nellie’s account of the dehumanizing conditions inside the asylum, the prevailing attitudes towards mental illness, contemporary ideas of treatment and the brutality and neglect of the system that she experienced were an eye-opener for the authorities. The authorities were left red-faced when it was discovered that insanity could so easily be faked. However, her expose of the conditions inside the Lunatic Asylum for Women at Blackwell’s Island prompted a grand jury investigation in which she was asked to testify. The Department of Public Charities and Corrections was allotted a larger budget as a result of this. Nellie Bly, or to give her real name, Elizabeth Jane Cochrane, was a champion of human rights. She was also an extremely adventurous and creative journalist who looked at her profession not just as a job. A later series of articles that followed Ten Days… was one in which she aimed to beat Phineas Fogg’s record of 80 days recreating the journey described in Jules Verne’s novel. Nellie completed the nearly 25-thousand km journey in 72 days. Her other articles included Six Months in Mexico, a report on Mexico under the dictator Porfirio Diaz. She retired from journalism after marrying the industrial tycoon Robert Seaman and proceeded to devote herself to social causes. Ten Days in a Madhouse is a riveting account of the shocking and pathetic condition of mental health rehabilitation in the early part of the twentieth century. More great books at LoyalBooks.com
