Parallel Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans is a series of biographies of famous men, arranged in tandem to illuminate their common moral virtues or failings. The surviving lives contain twenty-three pairs of biographies, each pair consisting of one Greek and one Roman, as well as four unpaired, single lives. Plutarch was not concerned with writing histories, as such, but in exploring the influence of character, good or bad, on the lives and destinies of famous men. The first pair of lives the Epaminondas-Scipio Africanus no longer exists, and many of the remaining lives are truncated, contain obvious lacunae and/or have been tampered with by later writers. His Life of Alexander is one of the five surviving secondary or tertiary sources about Alexander the Great and it includes anecdotes and descriptions of incidents that appear in no other source. Likewise, his portrait of Numa Pompilius, an early Roman king, also contains unique information about the early Roman calendar. In this copyright expired 11-volume translation from the Loeb Classical library, the order of the paired lives is rearranged to present the Greek lives in chronological order. Vol 3 presents the paired lives of Pericles and Fabius Maximus and Nicias and Crassus. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia by Karen Merline.)

What if the man you love is the God of the Dead? That’s the problem facing Persephone. Her mother, Demeter, is a Level-1 goddess who wants Persephone to marry Darryl, demi-god of home repairs, and stay close to home. Her father, Zeus, the top god on Mount Olympus, is a bit grumpy these days, fed-up with all the demands being made on him. And Hades, well, now that she’s getting to know him, Hades isn’t what Persephone expected at all — he’s handsome, smart, sensitive and witty — in a word, hot. Beautiful, intelligent and strong-willed, Persephone’s in line to be a Level-1 goddess herself someday. The problem is … she’s dissatisfied and restless. This new take on the classic myth is a smart, sexy, fast-moving read. Dead Beautiful explores the many faces of love, explains why there are four seasons, and reveals what really happens after death. * The author would like to thank filmmakers Joseph Ghaleb (www.josephghaleb.com), and Daniel Faria (www.danielfaria.com) and musicians Manuel Iradian and David Evangelista for their permission to use an excerpt of their performance of Vivaldi’s Summer theme.
