The Health Edge: translating the science of self-care

The Health Edge: translating the science of self-care

    by

    Since Feb 11, 2021 15:46 UTC

“It’s not what we don’t know that gets us into trouble. It’s what we know that ain’t so”. Will RogersWe believe the explosion of life science research from many disciplines had catapulted ahead of our capacity to process, integrate, understand, and apply. We are interested in translating all that is out there as news to use. A fundamentally different understanding of human biology has emerged. The implications from the perspective of self-care are profound. We are rapidly moving away from the debate of nature versus nurture toward an understanding that life emerges from a dynamic landscape of nature via nurture. We are passionate about the science. We are passionate about the implications. We believe in the capacity and possibility made possible by being alive here and now! We are beautifully designed to be on the African Savannah, living fully integrated with our planet, and in the context of social relationship. Our modern environment is not well designed to promote human health and the capacity to thrive. Many are struggling to maintain balance and traction in lives that often feel overwhelming and frightening. The challenge is to better leverage our superb ancestral adaptation for a different and radically challenging modern environment. Everything that touches us today has the potential be be very familiar or totally foreign. The less aware one is of the day to day distance between what we are biologically , as a species, “familiar with” and what we actually encounter, the fewer the possibilities for more effective alignment. Leaving one’s health trajectory to chance in our modern environment is a very risky proposition. We are interested in holding the science to the light with an open and humbled mindset. Like you, We are intrepid explorers interested in how we emerge in the midst of our relationship with the environmental inputs of our lives…how we eat, how we move, how we sleep, how we navigate the mind fields of conflict in our lives, how socially connected we are, how we manage the burden of environmental toxins in our lives, how much meaning we cultivate in our work, love, play and how we interpret and respond to stress in our lives. We will drill deep, share all that my experiences has taught and do all that we can to create value for you as you seek to find your health edge. We always welcome your feedback.Mark and John

    The Shetland and Orkney Connection

    The Shetland and Orkney Connection

    by

    Since Mar 27, 2023 07:30 UTC

The Shetland Islands are situated in the North Sea 200 miles north of Aberdeen, Scotland and 250 miles west of Bergin, Norway. They consist of 100 islands, with only about a dozen of them inhabited. Its weather gets a bad rap but its people are intensely hospitable and neighbourly. In April 2002, a small group of enthusiasts – Jack, Irene, Barbara and Nan – first gathered to explore the possibility of creating a regular radio programme. Nervous at their lack of radio experience as producers, they wondered if they would measure up. Over the months, as they got to grips with broadcasting, the local café kept them buoyed with coffee and muffins as they met to discuss programme ideas and confidence slowly grew. There was a hunger in the community for contact with stories and people from The Shetlands. People wanted to gain an understanding about their family histories, so the backing of the local Shetland Society was key. Irene was the authority on Shetland music so listeners got to know some fantastic modern groups who rode the wave of the renaissance of fiddling music. Barbara went on a huge learning curve and made connections with her island-dwelling great, great grandmother. Both Nan’s parents immigrated to NZ in 1922 and she visited Shetland four times – each time in a different season. For Nan, doing the programme is “like giving something back for the fantastic upbringing my mother and father gave me – including the great pride in our strange heritage.” “Don’t just talk about the past….” was the message given very strongly from the organisation. The Shetland character is very droll so over the years the team has included fun pieces about life in Shetland today (bizarre cricket matches, letters from “home” and even the Unst bustop), themes matching NZ celebrations like July’s KidsFest when they linked in with children, grand-children or even great grandchildren. Stories, poetry and recollections from both world wars abound. Visitors to the city are snapped up if they have Shetland connections, and the hope is to one day interview ex-Prime Minister Helen Clarke – she had a great uncle.. The aim is to get a balance between nostalgia pieces and contemporary issues, experiences and music.

Tiffany Keith and then after the sermon, we will reflect on the theological foundation of the sermon, the process of creating it, and the laughs and tears it brought. According to the Pulitzer website, anyone can nominate anything for a Pulitzer Prize, and Pulitzer Surprises takes advantage of that horrible idea. Eliza Cossio (The Daily Show) and Caroline Schaper (Full Frontal, Letterman) have their favorite comedians perform their submission for a Pulitzer. Then they interview a real-life Pulitzer Prize winner who has actually done something good. At the end of the show the audience will cast their vote on who deserves a Pulitzer, and then it will really be submitted for a Pulitzer Prize. That winner walks away a “Pulitzer Prize Entrant.” Show tapes monthly at Union Hall.
