International conference organised by Ertegun Scholar Manuel Muhlbacher and his college advisor Nicholas Cronk. Imprisoned during his lifetime and sanctified in the twentieth century, the Marquis de Sade has attracted considerable critical interest during the last decades. He was a favourite of literary theory in the sixties and seventies, while more recent scholarship has begun to explore how Sade subversively rewrites major texts of the French Enlightenment. As the constant interest in Sade shows, his work continues to puzzle and fascinate his readers. The conference Sade, l’inconnu? Nouvelles approches critiques brought together acknowledged specialists as well as young researchers to discuss emerging topics in Sade studies. Beginning with a keynote lecture by Michel Delon, the editor of Sade’s works in the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, the conference engaged with neglected aspects of Sadean writing and highlighted perspectives for future research. The papers covered such topics as intertextuality in Sade, the Marquis’ universally neglected ‘decent’ texts and implied readership in Sade. For the 200th anniversary of Sade’s death in 2014, the papers will be published as an issue on Sade in Romance Studies

Loving other human beings is both the trickiest and most important thing we’ll ever do.
It’s the most important, because the love we share with other people is what gives our lives meaning; it’s tricky because the actual people that we love can make us want to tear our hair out.
Fortunately, the Jewish tradition has tremendous resources to help us think about our relationships – with our partners, our children, our parents and our friends. How do we love when we are wounded ourselves? How do we express anger without slipping into scorn? How do we love our children as they are, while still shaping who they might become?
Good Jewish Lover, from the Pardes Institute in Jerusalem is a podcast that brings the Torah of relationships to the reality of contemporary lives. During each episode, Rabbi Brent Chaim Spodek will explore a classic Jewish text with a guest who has important and relevant things to say about contemporary relationships.

The Time Machine is a science fiction novella by H. G. Wells, published in 1895 for the first time and later adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It indirectly inspired many more works of fiction in many media. This 32,000 word story is generally credited with the popularisation of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to such a vehicle. (Introduction by Wikipedia)
