Vanity Fair by THACKERAY, William Makepeace

Vanity Fair by THACKERAY, William Makepeace

    by

    Since Jan 1, 1970 00:00 UTC

Vanity Fair: A Novel without a Hero is a novel by William Makepeace Thackeray that satirizes society in early 19th-century England. Like many novels of the time, Vanity Fair was published as a serial before being sold in book form; it was printed in 20 monthly parts between January 1847 and July 1848. Thackeray meant the book to be not only entertaining but also instructive; this is shown both by the narrator of the book and in Thackeray’s private correspondence. The novel is now remembered as a classic of English literature, though some critics claim that it has structural problems; Thackeray sometimes lost track of the huge scope of his work, mixing up characters’ names and minor plot details. The number of allusions and references it contains can make it difficult for modern readers to follow.

    Great Britain at War

    Great Britain at War

    by

    Since Apr 19, 2011 18:16 UTC

The book follows Jeffery Farnol as he visits a number of key locations around Britain and on the continent, each demonstrating how members of English society have come together to work towards the goal of “defeating the hun”. On a visit to a naval dockyard, he reports on how the ships are being constructed, takes us on a tour of a destroyer and introduces us to the crew. He also visits a machine gun factory, and discovers how the great guns are built. His tour continues onto the continent where he visits a hospital, a training camp, and artillery battery at the front in action. While in France he discovers the horrors of war, learning that it’s more than just guns and glory, there’s blood and death close at hand. A visit to an active aerodrome shows us the newly arrived aircraft, and from the people there we learn of their daring in combat. Finally the tour draws to an end at Ypres, knows simply as “wipers” to the troops. A place of great history and architecture now turned to ashes and rubble. Yet, despite the destruction, the author finds glory, honour and even hope for a better future

Ever listen to the words of songs? Like, really listen? We do, and we think everyone should.

Who’s “we”? We is Daniel Maté (award-winning musical theatre lyricist, composer, co-author of the NYT bestselling “The Myth of Normal”, so-called mental chiropractor) and Carice van Houten (Emmy-nominated as Melisandre from “Game of Thrones”, also seen in “Dangerous Liaisons” on Starz, Paul Verhoeven’s “Black Book”, “Valkyrie”).

We both love listening and talking about music and words, and we do it a LOT on this show. All eras, all genres, nothing off-limits. Plus a metric shit-tonne of free associating. So basically, it’s a podcast about everything. Join us!

    Gone, But Never Forgotten

    Gone, But Never Forgotten

    by

    Since Apr 26, 2021 09:00 UTC

Gone, But Never Forgotten is a podcast that tells mostly Canadian true crime stories. Disappearances, solved and unsolved murders and more.

True Crime gives us many examples of the anti-hero. The character that we find ourselves possibly rooting for, even though they do not possess or show the traits that are common in a hero. The anti-hero is not idealistic and certainly often works outside the boundaries of morality. Many of us think of people like Gary Plauché who killed his son’s kidnapper and molester in 1984. This week we are going to cover another person who was in that same vein. This man, in 2016 would track down a number of sex offenders by getting their information from the nation’s public registry on the matter. He would attack at least three men who had previously been convicted of sexual crimes and after being dubbed The Alaskan Avenger, he would eventually wind up behind bars.
