Welcome to Vaguely Music, where co-hosts Ryan Strumpfler and Kelsey Jacobsen go inside the minds and lives of people in the industry. Tired of the same old “I practiced really hard and now I’m famous” story line? We hope to pick apart the stories and see where luck, networking, and sheer bravado make the difference from living room performer to industry contributor. We also discuss the MANY ways to be involved in the music community, from full-time performer to enthusiastic part-time hobbyist; sound engineer to instrument manufacturer; manager to networker; teacher to writer, and more.

Welcome to Education Unimagined, where current and former students share how they imagine education and schools could be regarding student leadership! It’s time for a change in education, we need to empower our youth with both education and leadership so that they can take up the mantle of our future. What are we doing to empower students who want to make a difference? When we say an educator’s job is to inspire the future generation, we should take this seriously. So why not start imagining what could be, and that starts with listening to the voices of students? How about a particular school where all students are encouraged and supported in leadership roles that are relevant to their personal interests? In many ways, schools can be devoted exclusively to student aspirations while Education Unimagined is an opportunity to give students a voice, in a system where often their voices are unheard. We ask them to share their experiences and offer advice on how we can do better for all.

There are three ps that come with a career in music and no, we don’t mean pianississimo!
Practice. Performance. Pressure.
In every aspect of a musician’s career there is an undeniable element of pressure. This week Alex and Helen dig into the different types of pressure musicians experience, from self-applied pressure to pressure exerted by colleagues and friends. They talk about both the bad and good effects of pressure, considering how in some cases performers can even benefit from a little pressure. They offer you their top tips on how best to deal with pressure, encouraging you to focus on the present moment and to trust that it’s more about the entire artistic process than the end product.
