    The Ballad of 18 Women

    The Ballad of 18 Women

    by

    Since May 12, 2022 16:49 UTC

Women in Action was an arts and heritage project, led by Collective Encounters in 2020-2022, that used drama and creativity to celebrate women’s resilience, activism and community organising across Merseyside. The Ballad of 18 Women is the major final outcome of the project, incorporating testimonies recorded in oral history interviews as well as poetic narration and original music and song. This radio ballad highlights the stories of 18 Merseyside women to give an insight into the incredible contributions women make every day to improve lives in our region. Woven together, they give a glimpse of the multitude of positive actions that hold, nurture and empower our communities. The 18 women share a concern for fairness and social justice, but their causes, actions and impacts are many and varied. Some would not consider themselves to be ‘activists’, but all have given of themselves to help others and in doing that have made the world a better place. The radio ballad pulls some common threads from their stories; the archive collection (available online or on request) offers the full recording for each person, showing the richness of their individual contributions. We hope the ballad and recordings will inspire new women activists, as well as sustain, celebrate and encourage those who are already working for change: it is a homage to these 18 women and to you. Unfiltered: Afghan, not Dewana

    Unfiltered: Afghan, not Dewana

    by

    Since Feb 5, 2022 14:00 UTC

“Unfiltered: Afghan, not Dewana,” is a podcast that focuses on raising mental health awareness in Afghan communities and societies. Often, when we tell other Afghans or even our parents that we are “depressed” or “sad”, the word “dewana” gets thrown back at us. Dewana translates to “crazy” in Dari and each episode will help you better understand that feeling sad and depressed does not mean we are crazy. My mission is twofold: breaking cultural barriers around mental health discussions, fostering better communication amongst Afghans, and amplifying Afghan voices worldwide. Each episode brings unique guests, encouraging open conversations and sharing stories to foster empathy and unity, as well as some solo episodes. Let’s embrace vulnerability, shatter boundaries, and make a difference as the proud, resilient Afghans we are. Email me at medinamua18@gmail.com with topic ideas or questions. Together, we’ll grow and heal. Together, my #notdewana family we will make our culture even more beautiful than it already is.

    A Church Dismantled–Then and Now

    A Church Dismantled–Then and Now

    by

    Since May 25, 2020 23:00 UTC

“Is God’s Spirit dismantling the church because we have so failed God’s mission? And if so, as I believe, how do we work with the Spirit rather than against the Spirit?” Prophetic or not, the idea I posited fifteen years ago of a dismantled church has only gained traction since I first posed it. The response to the podcast has been quite unexpected, now with more than 72,000 episodes downloaded in 102 countries and more than 2,700 cities. The podcast seems to particularly resonate with those on the run from the church and feel alienated or marginalized by the church. The podcast has allowed me to draw upon nearly three decades of teaching sociology, thirty-five years of sociological research, fifteen years of church and denominational consulting, twenty years of ministry, my childhood and coming of age in a conservative Mennonite/Amish community, and my diagnosis three years ago of Parkinson’s Disease. Most recently I have written the first biography of Walter Brueggemann entitled “Walter Brueggemann and the Prophetic Imagination: A Theological Biography” (Fortress Press, 2023). You can follow the development and release of the book, get access to my private pages, and subscribe to my blog for 4.95 annually at www.centerforpropheticimagination.org.
