I Remember Liking That Movie Podcast

    by

    Since Nov 20, 2022 05:00 UTC

Every episode, we explore a movie we haven’t seen in like forever, and see if it is still as good as we remember. We use the first part of the show to try and remember what we liked about the movie. Then we go over the movie which includes looking at the poster, taglines, actors, synopsis, and finally, we watch the trailer. Then we predict whether or not we will like it. The second part of the show is when we come back after watching the movie and review it. Usually with hilarious results. We love going back to watch all sorts of genres. Horror, Comedy, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Comedy, Action and Adventure. Doesn’t matter how bad the movie might seem. If we liked it back then, we’ll see if it holds up today.

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbott Abbott

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbott Abbott

    by

    Since Dec 25, 2023 00:00 UTC

If you’ve never heard the term “Mathematical Fiction” before, Edwin Abbott Abbott’s 1884 novella, Flatland can certainly enlighten you! Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions was published in 1884 and since then, it has been discovered and re-discovered by succeeding generations who have been delighted by its unique view of society and people. The plot opens with a description of the fictional Flatland. The narrator calls himself “Square” and asks readers to “Imagine a vast sheet of paper on which straight Lines, Squares, Triangles, Pentagons, Hexagons and other figures, instead of remaining fixed in their places, move freely about… but without the power of rising above the surface or sinking below it, very much like shadows…” This is a country where the “solid” or the three dimensional do not exist. The women are Straight Lines, while the men, depending on their status, are figures with three or more sides. The lowest class are the Triangles, while the highest class of all are the Circles. One night the Square has a dream about a world with two dimensions, but it turns out to be a nightmare, and Square is glad to return to the “reality” of Flatland. He has another strange experience, when he has a visitation. A strange presence enters his room. It is a Sphere. Square and his wife are shocked to see such a weird creature. But it begins talking to them and informs them that it belongs to a world called Spaceland. Square visits Spaceland with his new friend and once he realizes that more dimensions are possible, he undergoes a huge spiritual metamorphosis. However the rulers of Flatland are not about to accept such subversive views… Flatland is essentially a novel that uses satire to portray the rigid, unfair and oppressive social class system that pervaded Victorian England. Birth and status determined everything in a person’s life and it was almost impossible for people to move into the upper echelons of society. Flatland is also a virulent attack on the prevailing ideas about women, their role and status. Abbott portrays the unrelenting hierarchies that prevented people from achieving their personal goals. Readers may be reminded of other allegories and satires, notably Plato’s Cave and Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. For modern day readers, Flatland is indeed an eye opener into concepts that seemed fixed and certain a century ago, but have been proven otherwise through scientific research. Knowledge is seen as a continuum and not a fixed goal; this is what books like Flatland teach us.

Poems Every Child Should Know by Unknown

Poems Every Child Should Know by Unknown

    by

    Since Aug 25, 2020 00:00 UTC

A treasure trove of more than two hundred poems, this gem of an anthology compiled by Mary E Burt is indeed a most valuable set of poems to read or listen to. Published in 1904, Poems Every Child Should Know contains some well-loved verses like Thomas Gray’s Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, Lewis Carroll’s delightful parody Father William, Felicia Hemans’ deeply-moving Casablanca and other favorites. It also has lesser-known but equally beautiful pieces like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s The Arrow and The Song, Robert Browning’s The Incident of the French Camp, Eugene Field’s nonsense lyrics Wynken, Blynken and Nod and a host of other wonderful verses. For modern day children, unaccustomed to reading and memorizing poetry, the book is a throwback to the days when this was the norm in most classrooms and homes. Fragments from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, in which Mark Antony pays tribute to the dead Brutus, Polonius’ advice to his son Laertes from Hamlet with the stirring lines, “This above all: to thine own self be true…” are some of the masterpieces contained here. Poems Every Child Should Know also contained some of the most famous poems in English by poets like Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats, Browning and Milton. American poets like Walt Whitman are featured here with their immortal lines in poems like Song of Myself. Another famous American poet found here is Edgar Allan Poe with his iconic The Raven. The book is divided into six parts, with a very interesting and self explanatory preface by the author. She begins with something that readers would say when they first encounter a poetry anthology: “Is this another collection of stupid poems that children cannot use?” and goes on to explain how she selected the ones included here. Most of them were picked because they were short enough for a child to memorize. This is a now forgotten activity that can give hours of pleasure as you recall the lines long after you’ve put away the book. Others were chosen for the heroic and patriotic sentiments, like The Star Spangled Banner, Lord Ullin’s Daughter, The Charge of the Light Brigade, Horatius at the Bridge and a host of other inspiring poems. Mary Elizabeth Burt was a gifted teacher who believed that poetry had the power to inspire, educate and mold young minds so that they could mature into valuable and useful citizens of the country. For modern day readers, this is indeed a delightful collection, which offers endless hours of pleasure as you thumb through rediscovering old favorites, and enjoying new ones. But it’s also for those of us in charge of kids or children, particularly those of us who may have forgotten how much adventure is still out there. We of Cobbler’s Gulch hope this story helps you remember. We hope you join us. Either way, we offer you this: never let a goblin get your goat.

In 13th-century Japan, Ken’ishi is a 17-year-old ronin, a masterless samurai, in search of a master who will some day help him become a samurai. His unknown father’s ancient sword, Silver Crane, is only beginning to reveal its secrets when he saves the life of a noble maiden from a demon and his vicious bandit gang. But her father frowns–dangerously so–on their budding romance. The underworld kingpin known as Green Tiger recognizes Silver Crane, and knows its power. Can Ken’ishi discover the truth of his heritage and learn the secrets of Silver Crane without losing his heart…or his head? You’ll love this first volume in this epic historical fantasy series because its mix of martial arts action, history, myth, and romance will keep your ears glued to the story. Get it now! “A fusion of historical fiction and adventure fantasy, the first volume of Heermann’s Ronin Trilogy is a page-turning folkloric narrative of epic proportions…. [His] writing style is confident and fluid, his characters well developed and his serpentine story line anything but predictable. Numerous tantalizingly unresolved plot threads will have readers anxiously awaiting the second installment in this gripping tale of ill-fated love, betrayal and destiny.” – Publishers Weekly “Full of sword battles, intrigue, romance and fantastic elements blending well with historical ones, Heart of the Ronin is a very impressive opening in the Ronin Trilogy. It’s also a page turner that you can’t put down and will leave readers begging for more.”– Fantasy Book Critic

    Nina Kimberly the Merciless (Remastered)

    Since Aug 14, 2009 02:51 UTC

She’s on a mission to kill the man who loves her. Why? Because he’s an idiot. Ten years ago, Nina Kimberly the Merciless was cheated out of the life of adventure that she truly deserves. Her father, the fearsome barbarian conqueror Marcus the Merciless, met his first and only defeat at the hands of, well… a gopher hole. Ever since this epic humiliation, she and the rest of the horde have been stuck in the rural backwater kingdom of Langia. Now Francis IX, the idiotic king, has decided that he and Nina should be married. She can’t kill him without starting a succession war, but the alternatives? Eww! Nina has long yearned for a hero to sweep her up on a glorious quest, but Francis’ unwanted affections have forced her hand. No more waiting for a quest to find *her*, it’s time to get proactive. She sets off into the big wide world, but the King decides to tag along, complete with a security spell to alert the Kingdom if he’s killed. Nina is forced to swallow her pride and keep him safe… at least until she can find a way to break the spell. But nothing is ever simple in the life of a barbarian princess, and nothing is ever quite what it appears. The dragon is a pacifist (sometimes). The handsome rogue is a con-artist, but who is he conning? And even the wizard has a few surprises in store. While seeking the answer to all her problems, Miss the Merciless discovers that what she’s always wanted may not actually be what she *wants*. *Nina Kimberly the Merciless* is a comic coming of age story filled with magic, mayhem and mercenaries, but mercy? Never. This is a remastered version of the novel, with an all-new higher quality recording. The classic version of Nina Kimberly the Merciless is also available. Nina Kimberly the Merciless is now in print, available for purchase at Amazon.com
