King Arthur and His Knights by Maude L. Radford

King Arthur and His Knights by Maude L. Radford

    by

    Since Sep 21, 2020 00:00 UTC

Published in 1903, King Arthur and His Knights by Maude L. Radford is an easy to read version of the Arthurian legends, made simple and interesting for children. Maude Lavinia Radford Warren was a Canadian born American who taught literature and composition at the University of Chicago between 1893-1907. Following the success of some of her books, she left teaching to take up writing as a full time career. She also served as a war correspondent for the New York Times magazine during WWI and contributed several remarkable features on the role of women in the conflict. Some of the books she wrote for adults like The White Flame of France are non-fiction accounts of her wartime experiences in Europe. Some of her other novels like Barbara’s Marriages deal with social issues of the day. The book begins with the traditional childhood invocation so beloved of children all over the world, “Once upon a time…” and opens with the miraculous incident through which young Arthur realizes that he is the heir to the throne and the rightful owner of the fabulous sword, Excalibur. The rest of the chapters deal with several well known stories connected with the legend of Camelot. How each one of the famous Knights of the Round Table arrives at Camelot, Arthur’s marriage to Guinevere, the quest for the Holy Grail and finally, Arthur’s poignant death at the hands of the evil Sir Mordred on the lake isle of Avalon and the final return of Excalibur to the depths of the lake are all dramatically presented. King Arthur and His Knights is indeed a captivating read for children and makes a great read-aloud book for bedtime. For older children, it may perhaps spur them on to further research into this blend of fact and fiction, legend and myth, history and fable. The charming illustrations by Walter J. Enright add to the book’s appeal for children. Maude L Radford wrote several other books for young readers, among them Robin Hood and his Merry Men, Mother Hubbard’s Wonderful Cupboard, Mother Goose and Her Friends, Peter-Peter, Adventures in the Old Woman’s Shoe and many more, making her one of the best loved writers of children’s books in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Though most of her works are forgotten today, her books are sure to capture childhood imagination and are told in a simple, easy to grasp style. More great books at LoyalBooks.com

Lost and Not Found – Director’s Cut

Lost and Not Found – Director’s Cut

    by

    Since Apr 12, 2010 15:14 UTC

True Love. No limits, no obstacles, no miscommunications. Only Love. “Give up, let go, leave everything behind, follow your passions, and remember how to fly, and everything you’ve ever dreamed of can be yours.” –That’s how this story goes. There’s no arch villain, no dark conspiracy, not even a comedy of errors. This story goes straight to the heart of happily ever after and, like true love, it never strays. The Director’s Cut of Lost and Not Found begins where one person reaches that point of “enough is enough,” stops playing by the rules, and starts following his heart. Leaving behind everything that led to his decision, and restoring parts of the story that had once been left on the cutting-room floor, it delivers a new experience whether you’ve read the other editions or not. In these pages you’ll find a faerie, a two-headed monster, titans young and old, a flying city, amazing museums, unusual time mechanics, and many more wonders as they’re discovered by two people in love. This cut of the book was made for the lovers and the dreamers out there.

Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz by L. Frank Baum

Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz by L. Frank Baum

    by

    Since Sep 20, 2020 00:00 UTC

Its publication soon after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake got readers instantly hooked on the story in which Dorothy and her friends sink into the bowels of the earth, following a devastating earthquake in California. Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is the fourth in the series of books written by American children’s author L. Frank Baum. In this novel, Dorothy visits her Uncle Henry in his California ranch. She, her friends, her cousins and a few pets are traveling in a buggy when the earth suddenly splits open and the entire lot falls into the crack. From here on, a series of adventures follows, with the children having bizarre encounters in the Land of the Mangaboos which is inhabited by the Vegetable People. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz suddenly makes his appearance and together, they all travel onto further amazing countries. Princess Ozma appears to rescue Dorothy and her companions as they meet one disaster after another. Though Lyman Frank Baum wrote more than 50 novels, many short stories and hundreds of poems, he is today known almost exclusively as the author of the Oz stories. Born into immense wealth and privilege, he however, led an unhappy childhood as a sickly and weak youngster. His wealthy father purchased a small printing press to keep him occupied with writing, and young Frank and his brothers produced a home newspaper to entertain the family. This early enterprise provided the germ of a writing career that, however, earned critical and financial acclaim only when Frank was more than forty years of age. The first of the Oz books, written after a failed career in theater, was published in 1900. It was hugely successful and L. Frank Baum went on to write thirteen more in the series. Though he tried to abandon the series several times out of sheer boredom, the flood of letters from children clamoring for more, publisher’s demands and the disaster that his other books met with compelled him to continue. Today, the Oz phenomenon has resulted in theme parks, stage and screen shows, musicals, comics, merchandise, adaptations, translations into world languages, television and animation series. Baum himself set up the Oz Film Company and had plans to set up an Oz themed amusement park in his lifetime. The appeal of Oz and its uncanny predictions of a world that was to come with augmented reality, laptops, wireless phones, women in male dominated occupations and a host of other innovations all make the series interesting and innovative. Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz makes a great addition to your Oz collection. More great books at LoyalBooks.com
