    Yeah, I’m a Bitch

    Yeah, I’m a Bitch

    by

    Since Jun 9, 2021 21:17 UTC

Maria was an anxious mess who through the hardships of life went from needing to please everyone to being unapologetically authentic . After several years of dealing with bulimia, imposter syndrome, and feeling like she was always going to be the odd woman out, she decided to take charge of her life and found peace with none other than: Spirituality. Accepting yourself as you come and learning to change bad habits out of self love and not self hate comes with its ups and downs, so she talks it all, the good, the bad and the ugly, in hopes that her mistakes will help others. Yeah, I’m a bitch, will touch on some pretty triggering stuff so please proceed with caution.

Art is the language of the soul, and while it can be interpreted in a variety of ways depending on the individual, do we dismiss the artist’s intentions? It would be simple to enjoy a work of art if we divorced it from its creator, but at the end of the day, the pieces we adore are merely an extension of the artist’s mind. We can project whatever we want onto a piece, but only the artist knows what their original intentions were. Looking at art through an intersectional lens and interpreting it from an informed perspective will only add nuance to a work; after all, art is only a window into an artist’s mind and values. In this episode, Latine artist, Amorphousartboy, and I discuss what it’s like to be an artist and how our work relates to our personal experiences. Where do our work insecurities come from, and how has our approach to art changed as a result of Covid and the 2020 lockdown?

    Soul Stirrings

    Soul Stirrings

    by

    Since Sep 20, 2019 19:17 UTC

“Soul Stirrings” is Dr. Paul Patton’s 5-7 minute attempt to provide clarifying, maybe even inspiring, nuggets of insight about faith, communication, and culture along the journey of our existence. Paul is Professor Emeritus of Communication and Media at Spring Arbor University in Michigan, a former pastor, theater practitioner, author, and playwright. This podcast, certainly assuming Judeo-Christian presuppositions, draws steadily from the biblical witness. The concept of “soul stirring” is readily tied to Jewish rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s insight that moments of inspiration come and go, yet “having been inspired never passes” (Heschel, Man Is Not Alone, Harper and Row, 1966, p. 78). In other words, if one can retrieve the inspiring insight from literature, from performance art, or even the memorable quip of a friend as circumstances invite clarity and depth, one has an oasis of the mind whenever it is needed. A “soul stirring” is a truth, an insight, an observation that stirs the soul to reconsider its assumptions and reflect on its current course. The topics covered include the “Fruits of the Spirit,” as laid out in Saint Paul’s letter to the Galatians, nine virtues cultivated over a lifetime in the garden of one’s life. Another over-arching theme is the wise engagement with the title-wave of pop culture, technology, and media entertainment offerings that can inadvertently move us away from a healthy balance of work and rest. As the podcast’s introduction asserts, “where all things regarding faith, communication, and culture are considered.

I’m interviewing the artists who run the organizations that make up Chicago’s theatre scene to hear about their history and recent work, and to learn about how they’re adapting to the challenges of COVID-19.

You can donate to these companies through the websites provided in the episode links!

John Stoops is the Executive Director of The Revival, a theater and education company that uses improvisation and its underlying skill set to affect personal, professional, and social change both at home in Chicago and around the world. The company is located in Hyde Park, which is often considered the birthplace of modern improvisational comedy.

John began his career working in advertising, but after taking employer-sponsored improv classes at The Second City and realizing how much he enjoyed it, he began performing around the city and even moved to Amsterdam to join an improv group at one point. After 17 years in advertising, John left the industry and created The Revival, which officially opened in 2015.

As an arts organization on the south side of Chicago, The Revival has prioritized gathering an ensemble of teachers and collaborators that reflect the diverse community that it serves. While much of Chicago theatre is situated on the north side of the city and tends to draw in largely white audiences, The Revival has laid the foundations to be an organization that stays engaged with a wider demographic.

In this episode, John tells us about finding his way from advertising to the performing arts — and back agin, and then back again — as well as what sets the Revival apart, and how learning improv can serve people who are pursuing pretty much any career path.
