Who Are You? Conversations on Identity

Who Are You? Conversations on Identity

Who are you? We are not the words used in checkboxes on a census. We are not words alone, but words together, arranged into sentences, relating experiences. Each episode is not a comprehensive analysis of an individual’s identity. Each episode is one thread in one conversation with one person. But maybe that thread is a similar shade to a thread in you. And maybe if we weave together all these threads…

Who are we? What shapes us into the people we are? Over the last 50 years advances in society and technology has meant that we can be whoever we want to be. Infertile couples have the chance of conceiving a child; a man can become a woman; if an organ fails, you can get a new one. But is it all for the greater good? There are people in today’s society who wouldn’t think twice about putting a patent on our biological and genetic heritage. The tracks on this album discuss issues such as identity, the relationship between the natural and the social sciences, and the colossal topic of ethnicity, especially in the UK. The material forms part of the course DD100, An introduction to the social sciences: understanding social change

You can quit the gym, join a new golf club and move to a new city, but joining the citizenship club is not a choice; we are governed by the powers that decide who we are and what nation we belong to. Without agreeing to or choosing it, the vast majority of people in the world have their nationality conferred on them by where they were born or their parentage. But what happens if we do question it?

In All of Us Command is a show about countries and their national anthems. Each week, the hosts will draw a country at random and learn about their history and the history of their anthem. We will listen to the songs and rate them on several criteria. Join our hosts, Aaron and Kate, as they learn how very little they know about the world outside of Canada.

ISI Podcasts help to unpack different dimensions to the issue of statelessness, and to explore challenges and opportunities in working to ensure the right to a nationality around the world.Article 15 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone has the right to a nationality and that no one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality. Yet, there are more than 15 million people across the globe who face a life without a nationality; every ten minutes, another child is born stateless; and citizenship is increasingly wielded as a tool of exclusion. Without nationality, stateless people are vulnerable to discrimination and unequal treatment. They are denied access to education, healthcare, housing, employment, social welfare and documentation, as well as the right to own property, travel, be safe, free and equal, participate politically and have their voices heard. The Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion (ISI) is the first and the only human rights NGO dedicated to working on statelessness at the global level. Our mission is to promote inclusive societies by realising and protecting the right to a nationality. See www.institutesi.org for more details.
