Travel: In Situ with Darius Arya

Travel: In Situ with Darius Arya

    by

    Since Dec 21, 2018 10:33 UTC

Travel: In Situ is a podcast hosted by archaeologist Darius Arya. Each episode finds Arya on location discovering and uncovering elements of the past – from the back streets of Rome to the bazaar of Cairo, from the Agora of Athens to the Medina of Tunis, and from the Vatican Museums to the Roman emperor Diocletian’s palace of Split. Episodes drop each Monday!

Diocletian is the third century emperor that brought the Empire back from the brink of collapse. After generations of uncertainly, his will, administration, military prowess and ruthless drive established a new period of calm that rippled through the Roman empire. Just consider the tetrarchy ruling system, new management of provinces, Edict of Prices, and Great (Christian) Persecution! And when it was all said and done he retired in his bespoke fortified villa that became the core of the later town of Split, Croatia. So richly preserved that it is a noted UNESCO site and also the location for many a scene in Game of Thrones. Walk the streets of this historic site and explore the archaeology, art, and ancient history beneath with Darius on his recent visit!

Romans: The Master Key to Scripture

Romans: The Master Key to Scripture

    by

    Since Aug 22, 2018 14:00 UTC

The Epistle of Paul to the Romans is undoubtedly the most powerful human document that has ever been written. It is pure gold from beginning to end. This is the book that lit the fire in Martin Luther’s heart and brought about the Protestant Reformation, changing the history of Europe, as well as the world. This is the book that struck home as John Wesley sat in a little chapel in London listening to Luther’s Prelude to the Epistle to the Romans. Wesley said his heart was strangely warmed as he heard the truths of Romans set forth. There followed, through him, the great evangelical awakening that saved England from the fate of France and arrested the decay of English life, completely altering the history of the world again.

The splendidly evocative ruins of ancient Rome have long been a challenge to historians and archaeologists in reconstructing how it looked and functioned. It became the largest city in the western world during the imperial period, so how was the city constructed, and what were the materials used? How was it defended, supplied with food and water, and how were the people housed and entertained, and above all, how did it function? These video tracks use various famous sites such as the Baths of Caracalla and the Pantheon to answer some of these questions. This material forms part of the course AT308 Cities and technology: from Babylon to Singapore.
