    Seeing by Moonlight

    Since Aug 12, 2018 05:00 UTC

Kirkus Reviews – “A complex thriller that offers new revelations up until the very end. The book’s science-fiction element drives the major plot twists, but the most engaging scenes are those in which readers learn the real relationships and histories between the characters.”1941On the eve of America’s entry into World War II, Nazi Germany is developing a new weapon of unprecedented power, one that will give them ultimate victory over all the nations of the world. But the war turns against them before it is completed, and a conspiracy forms to preserve the weapon and carry on the research. 1999At the dawn of a new century, Alex Pyke, a self-styled bachelor entrepreneur, wants only the American Dream of a bigger house and a fatter bank account. But a business opportunity lures him back to Germany, the country he left as an orphan of five during the height of the Cold War. Upon his arrival, he is swept up in a deadly adventure involving an aging industrialist and his brilliant, beautiful niece. Even as Alex unravels the mysteries of his own family’s history, he makes a discovery that will change the direction of his life, and maybe the whole world beyond.

Five Sci-Fi Short Stories by H. Beam Piper by H. Beam Piper

Five Sci-Fi Short Stories by H. Beam Piper by H. Beam Piper

    by

    Since Dec 26, 2023 00:00 UTC

Henry Beam Piper’s book “Five Sci-Fi Short Stories“ is a collection of: The Answer, Temple Trouble, Flight From Tomorrow, Police Operation and Graveyard of Dreams. “The Answer” is about two nuclear scientists who have successfully made a very powerful weapon and are planning to drop it from space on un-expecting earthlings. The story is set in 1984, many years after a supposed nuclear war between the US and the Soviet Union had ended. The stories “Temple Trouble” and “Police Operation” deal with alternate histories which is a theme that Piper is well known for. “Temple Trouble” has a very interesting religious undertone which many readers will surely be curious about and in “Police Operation,” he introduces Varken Vall, one of the best characters that Piper brought to life. “Flight From Tomorrow” and “Graveyard of Dreams” on the other hand are both set in the future. Like in all of Piper’s works, these stories have a simple narrative style and a very interesting storyline. Most of his main protagonists in these stories also have a common factor: they’re self-reliant persons who can deal with any kind of situation which they face. Some experts believe that they’re a reflection of himself. Piper unlike most of the other writers during his time was largely self-educated and even worked various blue collar jobs before he became a successful writer. Piper’s “Five Sci-Fi Short Stories” is a good read for people who are interested in futuristic and alternate reality sci-fi stories.

    Plague Ship by Andre Norton

    Plague Ship by Andre Norton

    by

    Since Dec 16, 2020 00:00 UTC

A Free Trader rocket ship heads for the remote planet, Sargol, which is blessed with immense natural wealth and precious gemstones. The ship is manned by the heroic Dane Thorson and his crew of intrepid space traders. On Sargol, they enter into complicated negotiations with the inhabitants of this strange planet. These feline people, the Salariki, are reluctant to enter into a business partnership with the free traders till they discover that the ship carries a small amount of catnip on board which they’d obtained from another trading post. Completely overwhelmed, the Salariki agree to exchange the catnip for a valuable load of precious stones. Relieved and delighted, Dane Thorson and his crew begin their return journey. Suddenly, the crew begins to succumb to mysterious headaches and soon become semi-comatose. Just four young crew members and Dane himself seem to be immune. When the ship enters the vicinity of their own planet, Dane discovers to his horror that their spacecraft has been declared a “plague ship.” Can Dane and his young crew save the mission and their fellow crew members? Plague Ship by Andre Norton was first published in 1956. It is a sequel to the previous Dane Thorson story, Sargasso of Space and the second in the Solar Queen series, consisting of seven novels. Written in what is considered the Golden Age of Sci-Fi, the series presents the various adventures of Dane Thorson, a free trader and businessman who operates in the far reaches of outer space. Andre Norton is the pseudonym of Alice Mary Norton, who also wrote under the names Andrew Norton and Alice Weston. She was one of the first science fiction writers to be honored by being inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. After trying many careers, she began working as a reader at The Gnome Press, a tiny New York publishing house that specialized in sci-fi. This was where she discovered her interest and talent in both writing and sci-fi. She wrote hundreds of short stories and many sequential novels featuring certain main characters. Her books were extremely popular, well plotted and filled with great nuggets of scientific information. Her hero Dane Thorson is a likable, intelligent, fast thinking and well rounded character. Andre Norton’s fame waned with the reduced interest in lesser known sci-fi authors. However, her talent is undeniable and aimed mainly at the young adult reader. Though Plague Ship is a sequel, it’s still a fantastic stand alone read that could spur readers on to read the complete Solar Queen collection. More great books at LoyalBooks.com

The Food of the Gods and How it Came to Earth by H. G. Wells

The Food of the Gods and How it Came to Earth by H. G. Wells

    by

    Since Dec 22, 2022 00:00 UTC

Two stuffy English scientists, always looking to further their scientific knowledge, create a substance called Herakleophorbia, which in its fourth incarnation – known as Herakleophorbia IV – has the special ability of making things increase greatly in size. As the scientists begin experimentation on some chicks, the substance is misused by some “country folk” who don’t take it seriously and soon Herakleophorbia IV is running rampant throughout England and then across the globe, creating giant plants and animals that wreak havoc on the land and then the people. Then the first giant babies are revealed and for the first time humanity has to contend with the existence of a new race of giant people. How humanity deals with this shocking new creation is revealed in The Food of the Gods and How it Came to Earth.

After London, or Wild England by Richard Jefferies

After London, or Wild England by Richard Jefferies

    by

    Since Dec 1, 2023 00:00 UTC

First published in 1885, After London, or Wild England is considered to be one of the earliest instances of post-apocalyptic fiction, describing the effects of an unspecified catastrophe that dramatically changes the face of England and its population. Divided into two parts, the first depicts the fall of civilization, as society reverts to its more primitive roots, while the second part is set years after the apocalyptic event and examines the evident changes in both natural scenery and social structure. In addition, Jefferies offers a remarkable portrait of the natural world with his colorful imagery and evocative descriptions, which highlight his enthusiasm and devotion to nature. The first part of the novel begins with Jefferies’ description of a mysterious natural disaster that has taken its toll on England, and later goes on to provide a detailed account of the resurgence of nature in the aftermath of the dire calamity. Although the source of the disaster is not clearly distinguished, its effects on society and nature are immense, as the area has been substantially depopulated and engulfed by a newly formed lake. Slowly covering any traces of the industrial world, the land welcomes the return of wildlife to its unspoiled state, as trees, flowers, and plants begin to take over the area, while animals return to their feral states. Furthermore, the society that has remained reverts to its medieval roots, divided into tribal groups and a somewhat educated class. Subsequently, the novel shifts its focus to Felix Aquila, a dignified young man who sets out on a dangerous adventure, exploring the mystifying wilderness. In addition, Felix must face numerous predicaments along the way that test his durability and fortitude. Presenting a unique take on a post-apocalyptic world, with a generous supply of botanical detail, After London, or Wild England served as an inspiration for many writers to follow in Jefferies’ footsteps and make a contribution to the post-apocalyptic genre. Interestingly, Jefferies effectively employs nature as the dominant feature in the novel, emphasizing its presence and influence in an altered landscape. Painting a vivid illustration of unspoiled nature and illustrating the gripping notion of natural reversion and the downfall of civilization, the novel is a sure to enthrall nature enthusiasts.
