Design and Sustainability – for iPod/iPhone

Design and Sustainability – for iPod/iPhone

    by

    Since Jul 19, 2009 22:05 UTC

Are you aware of the environmental impacts of the stuff you buy? Is that chair you bought made from wood from a sustainable forest, or was it illegally logged ? Or perhaps your TV set’s inner parts are too difficult to recycle or cause pollution when it’s dismantled at the end of its life. All this adds up to a huge amount of damage to the planet. This album looks at how designers must respond to the increasingly urgent need for sustainability in product design. Designers now need to come up with not only better, more efficient designs, but must also consider the impacts in all stages in the life cycle of a product to minimise negative social and environmental consequences. This album also reveals how new product ideas and inventions are tested before they’re turned into commercially viable products. You may also want to explore the albums “Energy and Sustainability” and “Sustainable Communities”. This material is taken from The Open University Course T307 Innovation: designing for a sustainable future.

    Planetary science – for iPod/iPhone

    Planetary science – for iPod/iPhone

    by

    Since Jan 23, 2009 02:58 UTC

Our planet is at the centre of a cosmic shooting gallery. This album examines the evidence for and effect of asteroid impacts and meteor explosions on Earth. The 6 video tracks assess the environmental effects caused by bolides of different sizes and trajectories. How do scientists detect that a crater on Earth is the result of an asteroid impact? Ian Gilmour visits an unusual circular feature at Nordingen in Southern Germany and Peter Schultz describes the oblique impact at Rio Quarto in Argentina. When comets collide with planets, the consequences can be catastrophic. What kind of impact could cause mass extinction on earth? This material forms part of The Open University course S283 Planetary science and the search for life.

    The Angry Clean Energy Guy

    by

    Since Mar 25, 2019 16:00 UTC

There is so much to be angry about, if you are a clean energy guy. Every day, so many things that happen around the world make me angry when I look at them with lenses colored by the climate change chaos unfolding everywhere around us. And I am especially angry because I know we can solve the climate change crisis if we were only trying. Each week, I will share with you a few topics that struck me and that I was very angry about – and this will generally have to do with climate change, solar or wind power, plastic pollution, deforestation and reforestation, environmental degradation, wildlife, the oceans and other related topics.
