MONARCH: the Big Bear of Tallac, by Ernest Thompson Seton

MONARCH: the Big Bear of Tallac, by Ernest Thompson Seton

    by

    Since Feb 25, 2009 06:45 UTC

Ernest Thompson Seton’s book, “Monarch, the Big Bear of Tallac.” Published in 1919, it tells the story of a tiny Grizzly cub who grew to be the Monarch of the Plains — and the Prisoner of humanity’s arrogance. “Kind memory calls the picture up before me now, clear, living clear: I see them as they sat, the one small and slight, the other tall and brawny, leader and led, rough men of the hills. They told me this tale–in broken bits they gave it, a sentence at a time. … They told of the river at our feet: of its rise, a thread-like rill, afar on Tallac’s side, and its growth–a brook, a stream, a little river, a river, a mighty flood that rolled and ran from hills to plain to meet a final doom so strange that only the wise believe. … reverencing the indomitable spirit of the mountaineer, worshiping the mighty Beast that nature built a monument of power, and loving and worshiping the clash, the awful strife heroic, at the close, when these two met.” – Ernest Thompson Seton

    Sewing Community

    Sewing Community

    by

    Since Jun 10, 2020 15:00 UTC

A podcast where quilters, tailors, fashion designers, garment industry workers, and fabric/textile artists from Westchester, NY share personal stories and family histories related to sewing and fabric. ArtsWestchester, the officially designated arts council for Westchester County, is working with Amanda Browder, a Brooklyn-based fabric artist, to transform a 9-story building in downtown White Plains into a cascading colorful, large-scale fabric installation called METROPOLIS SUNRISE. All of the stories heard in this podcast are from individuals involved in the building of this monumental work of public art. While this project is currently on hold because of COVID-19, our hope is that these stories, will in some small way, sustain and deepen the social fabric of community. Sewing Community is part of ArtsWestchester’s Folk Arts Program, made possible in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe

The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe

    by

    Since Dec 11, 2019 00:00 UTC

A woman in prison awaiting a death sentence is given a reprieve because she is pregnant. She migrates to America abandoning the baby to the care of a foster mother. The child, a girl, grows up and begins working as a servant in a wealthy household. Here she is pursued by the two sons of the house and ultimately marries the younger one. When he dies, leaving her with two young children to look after, she begins a life of deception and confidence trickery which ends in great tragedy and disgrace. In her old age, events take a less tragic turn and her redemption comes from sources she least expects. First published in 1762, The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe is not as well known as his most famous novel, Robinson Crusoe. However, it gained enormous popularity as a social and psychological document of the traditions, customs and manners of the eighteenth century, and was reputed to be based on a true story. The full title of the book is almost a mini-synopsis! The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders, &c. Who was Born in Newgate, and during a Life of continu’d Variety for Threescore Years, besides her Childhood, was Twelve Year a ——, five times a Wife (whereof once to her own Brother), Twelve Year a Thief, Eight Year a Transported Felon in Virginia, at last grew Rich, liv’d Honest, and died a Penitent. Written from her own Memorandums. Peopled with a collection of interesting characters, the book is thought-provoking and unusually bold for its time, with the heroine being quite different from the good, chaste, long-suffering lady of that era. However, her boundless optimism, strength, self-assertiveness and matter-of-fact shrewdness are attractive in their own way. More great books at LoyalBooks.com
