Jeremiah 6:16 “Thus says the LORD: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.” The ancient way is not just for those who lived “back then”- it is for you and for me now. It is a reality that surrounds us at all times, and that reality is very supernatural. It is not just myths, fairy tales, and old stories. It is a vibrant part of every persons life- hidden right in plain sight. Can you see it? All you have to do is ask.

What do you pay attention to? How do I determine what’s worthy of my limited attention? It’s the questions every human asks at some point, and the questions we MUST ask, to thrive in this one precious life. And it’s these types of questions (and more), we want to wrestle with on The Art of Paying Attention. We believe the work of paying attention is not optional, and something we all must learn to do well. The poet Mary Oliver said, “To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work.” Every week, we’ll consider this endless, and proper work, of paying attention. What do we see? What are we learning? WHAT or WHO needs MORE attention? Join writer, creator, teacher, and accidental entrepreneur, Ryan J. Pelton, as he explores with others, the essential Art of Paying Attention. Most episodes feature an interview with a bonafide “attention-collector” working in the arenas of creativity, art, music, writing, publishing, entrepreneurship/business, and spirituality. Join in the conversation and learn to see with new eyes a world bursting with hints of hope. Often in the most unlikely places.

In a matter of days, our world has significantly changed. A week ago, we could go to restaurants with large groups of friends. A week ago, we could go out to the movies if we wanted. A week ago, we were cheering on our favorite college basketball teams as March Madness was only beginning. A week ago the four of us were teaching 8th graders at Oldham County Middle School. In a matter of days, we went from teaching in our classrooms with 8th graders surrounding us, to creating digital lessons for our students from miles away. We went from laughing in the hallways together to group messages and emails. We went from high fiving students to lagging Google Meet conversations. A week ago we would have never made this podcast. We’re just four teachers who want to stay connected to our students, our school community, and one another. This podcast is a way for us to do that while still keeping our distance. Each episode we will take 5 questions from our own students to discuss and explore topics and ideas suggested to us by them. You can absolutely expect laughing and sarcasm, but, more than that, you can expect to hear a unique perspective into the infamous NTI days from the view of the teachers behind the screen! We’d love to take you along this journey with us. A lot can change in a week. A week ago, our students would have seen us laughing together in the hallways of Oldham County Middle School, today they’ll hear us laughing on a podcast. There is a beauty to the world feeling small. When we walk through life, through good and bad times, we find comfort in stumbling across the familiar: the familiar paths home, the familiar faces in the grocery store line, the familiar names that pop up in conversations that end in, “Wait, I know him!” AndContinue reading “Episode 6: Train Rides, Facing Fears, Ghost Tours, and Sketchy Hotels”
