‘Co. Aytch,’ Maury Grays, First Tennessee Regiment or, A Side Show of the Big Show by Sam R. Watkins

Samuel “Sam” Rush Watkins (June 26, 1839 – July 20, 1901) was a noted Confederate soldier during the American Civil War. He is known today for his memoir Company Aytch: Or, a Side Show of the Big Show, often heralded as one of the best primary sources about the common soldier’s Civil War experience….Sam’s writing style is quite engaging and skillfully captures the pride, misery, glory, and horror experienced by the common foot soldier. Watkins is often featured and quoted in Ken Burns’ 1990 documentary titled The Civil War. (Introduction from Wikipedia)

This isn’t so much black hair tips as it is a discussion of how black hair affects the person who owns it. We cannot deny that who we are as Black women is wrapped up in our hair for better or worse. My journey starts with my mother (and hairstylist) who I lost this year. Where does yours begin?

1601: Conversation, as it was by the Social Fireside, in the Time of the Tudors by Mark Twain

1601: Conversation, as it was by the Social Fireside, in the Time of the Tudors by Mark Twain

    by

    Since Dec 31, 2020 00:00 UTC

An atypical piece of writing by Mark Twain, the short bawdy skit documents a conversion between Queen Elizabeth and several notable writers of the time, including Sir Walter Raleigh, Francis Beaumont, Ben Jonson, and William Shakespeare. Despite first being published in 1880, the piece remained anonymous for a period of time, until it was later acknowledged by Twain in 1901 as his own. Comprised of humor, descriptive imagery, ribald connotations, and vulgar language, the faux conversation is simultaneously humorous and repulsing, but nonetheless a wonder for its satirical precision. Written as a fictitious dialogue between Queen Elizabeth and her guest luminaries at court, the short story is accounted in a diary entry by one of her disgusted cup-bearers who observe the scandalous conversation of scatological nature. The conversation is instigated by a thunderous and foul reeking fart as the group begins to discuss its features and origin. Each individual subsequently comments on the issue and their experiences with flatulence. The conversation then takes a different direction as the topic of sex is introduced, and the individuals discuss various customs and rumors they have heard, including sexual appetite, physical features, and shocking sexual exploits. Furthermore, the issue of poetry and religion are put forward, with Shakespeare beginning to read poetry, hence prompting the characters to discuss poets, their work and ingenuity. The narrator continues to effectively record each shocking assertion as the conversation heatedly progresses. The short piece allows the audience to witness a completely different side to Mark Twain, as he criticizes literary figures and their works through his fantastic instance of potty humor. Entertaining and humorous throughout its short but rich content, the piece is a jewel considering its characters, historical context and the lewd imperceptible style employed by the great Mark Twain. A Woman’s Brew

    A Woman’s Brew

    by

    Since Sep 25, 2020 18:34 UTC

Welcome to A Woman’s Brew – The Podcast, where women talk about beer! A Woman’s Brew is two beer loving women on a mission to get more people drinking and talking about great beer. Joanne & Tori want to talk you through beer styles, breweries we love, beer tasting tips, beer traditions and more from the world of craft beer.

Joanne has been drinking beer since she was handed a Sam Adams Boston lager and realised that not all beer was yellow and fizzy. She was travelling the world while working on cruise ships at the time and tried every beer she could get her hands on. When she came home she decided she wanted to learn more about where the aromas and flavours in her favourite beers came from. During lockdown in the UK in 2020 she set herself the challenge to pass the Cicerone Certified Beer Server exam to earn a qualification in beer, just for fun! She passed with 97% and began to build her beer school Love Beer Learning to support other women to discover beer, build their confidence in beer tasting and amplify their voices in the beer community. She is now a Certified Cicerone and has made the leap to work in beer full time.

Though most people don’t believe it, Tori was born and raised near Boston in the US but has been living in the UK since 2013. When she first moved here, she stuck to ciders, Brewdog, and Brewdog guest beers and was a pretty big Brewdog fangirl. Within the last 2 years she started to branch out as she saw the scene grow to a point that she couldn’t miss out on it any longer. She says that since the beginning of 2020, she’s really belly flopped off the deep end into craft beer and hit a level she never thought she would where she now considers this her hobby. She loves taking photos in her spare time and when she travels, so already had a few Instagram accounts on the go, which is why she chose Instagram as the platform to start giving her thoughts on the beers she was trying. She refers to these as her “opinions nobody asked for” and it was just a way for her to pass time during lockdown while dusting off her old, rusty writing skills from many moons ago when she was a journalism student. She met Joanne in a Facebook beer group and after seeing her pass the CBS exam, approached her to create this podcast, where women teach women about beer!

The podcast will be with you once a month with our thoughts and views on the world’s favourite beverage. Find us on your favourite podcasting platforms and don’t forget to subscribe.
