Outlaw of Torn, The by BURROUGHS, Edgar Rice

Outlaw of Torn, The by BURROUGHS, Edgar Rice

    by

    Since Jan 1, 1970 00:00 UTC

The story is set in 13th century England and concerns the fictitious outlaw Norman of Torn, who purportedly harried the country during the power struggle between King Henry III and Simon de Montfort. Norman is the supposed son of the Frenchman de Vac, once the king’s fencing master, who has a grudge against his former employer and raises the boy to be a simple, brutal killing machine with a hatred of all things English. His intentions are partially subverted by a priest who befriends Norman and teaches him his letters and chivalry towards women. Otherwise, all goes according to plan. By 17, Norman is the best swordsman in all of England; by the age of 18, he has a large bounty on his head, and by the age of 19, he leads the largest band of thieves in all of England. None can catch or best him. In his hatred for the king he even becomes involved in the civil war, which turns the tide in favor of de Montfort. In another guise, that of Roger de Conde, he becomes involved with de Montfort’s daughter Bertrade, defending her against her and her father’s enemies. She notes in him a curious resemblance to the king’s son and heir Prince Edward. Finally brought to bay in a confrontation with both King Henry and de Montfort, Norman is brought down by the treachery of de Vac, who appears to kill him, though at the cost of his own life. As de Vac dies, he reveals that Norman is in fact Richard, long-lost son of King Henry and Queen Eleanor and brother to Prince Edward. The fencing master had kidnapped the prince as a child to serve as the vehicle of his vengeance against the king. Luckily, Norman/Richard turns out not to be truly dead, surviving to be reconciled to his true father and attain the hand of Bertrade (Summary by Wikipedia)

The NewUrbanJazz Lounge with Bob Baldwin (Est. 2008)

    by

    Since Mar 26, 2022 22:18 UTC

Established in 2007, the entire staff of City Sketches, Inc. is committed to delivering outstanding performance and client service to our wide variety of listeners worldwide. We are on over 45 terrestrial radio stations nationwide with over 450,000 listeners weekly. NewUrbanJazz was launched on October 1, 2008. On February 5, 2008, CD101.9 (NYC) flipped the format to Rock ‘n’ Roll, and shortly after, several stations flipped up and down the East Coast. “NUJ was tested in 2004 at WJSJ/Jacksonville, Fl. and the results were favorable”, says the native New Yorker. We began to add unknown US-based and international artists to the lineup quietly and was received with high marks. We have a couple other formulas that proved to be effective, so it only made sense to roll out our program.” In October, 2008, NUJ was added initially at College Jazz Stations that had a contemporary flavor. At the front of the pack were WJAB, WVSU, WFSK, WEIB. The reception at those stations was overwhelming, and other stations began to follow suit, including WVAS, WUMR, WFSH and WNAA. Recent station additions include in Iowa, Hawaii, Miami and two in Alaska. As of 2014, we are on 31 stations in 20 states and nearly 1/2 Million listeners weekly. Bob Baldwin – CEO/Founder Bob started his first job at the age of 15 to take care of his family after his father fell ill. After High School, he attended Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa., and acquired his degree in Business Administration with a Communication Minor. Prior to graduating, he interned with Frankie Crocker at WBLS in NY, which started his Broadcasting career part-time, in between developing his solo recording career. In between recording his first 6 CD’s (through 2008), he spent 3 years with MCI Sales and 14 years with Sprint’s Accounts Receivable Department. After 1997, he started City Sketches, Inc. and began working on 6 more discs. He also focused primarily on Radio Programming, which included WJSJ/Jacksonville, KJAZ/Bermuda and WCLK/Atlanta. In October, 2008, he launched the New UrbanJazz Lounge, which began at WJZZ (Radio-One) in Atlanta, and currently has stations in the South and Northeast. As Executive Producer, Baldwin has overseen the Brazilian-American Jazz Festival, The Croton Point Park jazz Festival, The Wednesday WindDown Jazz Festival and the Trumpets Jazz Series. In 2010, the staff of NUJ curated the NewUrbanJazz @ the Arts xChange music series, the “Westchester Musicians for Haiti” and “Jazz for Haiti” program in Newark, NJ, a partnership with the Red Cross of Northern NJ.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

    by

    Since Nov 21, 2023 00:00 UTC

Regarded as the pride and joy of American literature, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a picturesque novel depicting Huck’s epic journey from boyhood to manhood and the struggles he must face living in a corrupt society. The novel serves as a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, another famous work by Mark Twain. The plot unfolds in several locations sometime before the Civil War. The book opens with a description of Huck’s new life as he undergoes a process of “civilization” while living with the Widow Douglas and her sister Miss Watson. Although he dislikes the strict regime of education, manners, church and rigid clothing, which are a necessity to fit into society, Huck prefers anything to his previous life with his drunkard father Pap. However, just as things begin to stabilize, Pap returns to the picture and demands Huck give him the money that he had previously attained during an adventure with his best friend Tom Sawyer. Huck’s refusal to do so only infuriates Pap. Just when things are improving for Huck, he is kidnapped and mistreated by his no-good father. After faking his own death and on the run, he meets Jim who is a runaway slave with a bounty to his name. Huck must decide whether to trust his gut feeling and help an innocent flee slavery, or view the poor man simply as property. Caught up between ethics and legality, Huck must make a decision. The two set out together on a raft, both in search of freedom and experience many challenges on the way whilst at the same time an emotional bond is developed. Twain’s vibrant description of the places and people along the Mississippi River is one of the jewels of the novel, as well as the use of vernacular language and the presence of dialects. Moral and ethics, racism and slavery, and hypocritical society are just some of the targeted issues presented in the novel. Celebrated throughout generations, the slanted tale of adventure does not seize to spark appreciation although simultaneously stirring controversy.
