    A Letter from the Chef

    A Letter from the Chef

    by

    Since Apr 29, 2019 01:18 UTC

Contained in a recipe is a treasure of knowledge. Look deep enough and a dish tells you what’s available and what’s scarce for the cook, what’s important to them to show off- their medicine, religion, politics, history, economics. It’s all in the food that’s served to you. In short, a recipe is a letter from the chef connecting you to them in the most intimate, human, life-giving way.

A Letter from the Chef seeks to bring to light the stories presented by recipes and food traditions. We’ll dive into specific dishes and traditions to better understand the elements that created them to better learn about one another. We’ll aim to release a new episode during the season every two weeks.

In The Ring With Eusebius McKaiser

    by

    Since Apr 6, 2021 14:00 UTC

On In The Ring With Eusebius McKaiser I tackle all the uncomfortable topics that dominate public debate. With my reputation for fearless debate as a former World Masters Debate Champ, and a background in law and philosophy, you can expect debates on everything from whether or not it is racist for a non-black person to quote the N-word, to questions of how to tackle inequality, whether people are responsible for unconscious biases, the ethics of refusing to be vaccinated, the status of animals, debating books, and much more! The crucial differentiator of this podcast series compared to others is that it is fearless in its debate orientation, and no topic is off bounds! However, my motto is: “You are entitled to be treated with dignity …. but NOT to have your worldview affirmed!” So come with well-considered reasons for your viewpoints when you get YOUR chance to come on the platform to In The Ring With Eusebius McKaiser

After the Divorce by Grazia Deledda (1871 – 1936)

    Since Jul 16, 2023 01:00 UTC

Giovanna and Costantino Ledda are a happily married couple living with their young child in a Sardinian country village close to their extended family. Costantino is wrongly convicted of murdering his wicked uncle and with no way of supporting herself, Giovanna reluctantly divorces him and is driven to marry Brontu Dejas, a wealthy but brutish drunkard who has always lusted after her. As well as enduring a marriage amounting to slavery, Giovanna is derided by villagers for having two husbands. When Constantino is freed after the real murderer confesses to his crime, he and Giovanna are together again, but this time their relationship is outside the law, and sets both on a path of destruction, at the mercy of religious and social forces they cannot control. The author, Grazia Deledda, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926, for writings which show passion and sympathy for the people of her native Sardinia, and ‘After the Divorce’ (Dopo il Divorzio) is one of her finest works. – Summary by Tom Denholm

    Quicksand by LARSEN, Nella

    Quicksand by LARSEN, Nella

    by

    Since Jan 1, 1970 00:00 UTC

Quicksand is a 1928 novel by Nella Larsen, a writer of the Harlem Renaissance. It focuses on Helga Crane, a mixed-race woman who is a schoolteacher in the American south. As the novel opens, she suddenly decides to give up her teaching position and go north, back to her roots in Chicago. Helga’s restless search for identity is semi-autobiographical, inspired by Larsen’s own struggles to reconcile her mixed heritage with the racism of 1920s America. Although this novel was published after 1923, the copyright was never renewed and is therefore in the public domain. (Introduction by Elizabeth Klett)
