Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

    by

    Since Nov 17, 2023 00:00 UTC

Set in nineteenth century New England, Little Women follows the lives of the four March sisters-Jo, Beth, Amy and Meg. The novel is a classic rites of passage story, that has often split literature critics but has been adored by many over the years. Intended as a book for young girls, the book is too sentimental for some but plenty of adults and young men have Little Women firmly featured in their best books of all time. The pace of the novel can be slow at times and the language almost too perfect but the overall sympathetic tone of Alcott wins over the reader. The book is semi-autobiographical, with Jo Marsh mirroring the life of an ambitious Alcott. Just like Alcott, Jo is a strong, independent woman who is fighting through her domestic duties to do what she truly loves. Writing is Jo’s passion and in a world where women are expected to put personal growth aside in order to withhold traditional family values, she is met with many challenges. “I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.” The book speaks to every woman that has had to fight against convention. With their father away at war, the four sisters pull together to support each other but still have time to search for their own identity. These ‘little women’ are not children but young adults finding their way via love, religion and confidence. Whilst it may seem sad that the sisters do have to conform to some extent, if you read between the lines there is so much inspiration for young female readers.

    The Good Enough Mother

    The Good Enough Mother

    by

    Since Sep 16, 2019 14:33 UTC

The role of being a Mother offers us the potential for incredible expansion, growth, and power, while also being one of – if not THE – most challenging, undervalued, and taken for granted roles in the world. Motherhood Studies Sociologist, researcher, and single Mother, Dr Sophie Brock hosts The Good Enough Mother (TGEM) podcast with an aim to change how Motherhood is culturally defined and individually experienced. TGEM draws its name from a theorist and pediatrician Winnicott, who highlighted the ways ‘good enough’ parenting is actually what is best for our children – not perfectionism. The podcast centres the Mother as the starting point for conversations with experts and change-makers who are passionate about seeing social, cultural, and institutional change to better support Mothers and therefore our families, and communities.

    Careering into Motherhood

    Careering into Motherhood

    by

    Since Jan 21, 2020 13:57 UTC

Why do so many of us go careering into motherhood, unaware of just how hard it is to have a meaningful career as well as family commitments? And why don’t men struggle with their careers in the same way? We talk about the rise of flexible jobs and work anywhere policies, executive burnout and the pressure to be “always on,” Government claims that 75% of mothers are in work, and yet there’s being in work and there’s having a career. If you’ve had a career break, been on maternity leave, want a career change, want to relaunch yourself back into work or just want a happier balance between work and everything else, Careering Into Motherhood is here with practical advice, insightful interviews and real human stories. Jane Johnson helps empower women and negotiate with employers to offer flexible working so they can stay in their careers. She negotiated her own senior role as a job-share, and in 2019 she set up the Careering Into Motherhood Facebook Group to promote discussion around flexible working, the group now has more than 8,000 members and a successful women’s mentoring programme.
