Are you a mama that often solo parents while your partner works away? Are you struggling to keep it together, and balancing all the things on your own? Do you have a hard time setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care? Do you wonder if more joy, peace, and fulfillment is possible for you in this season of life?
The Solo & So Well podcast is a landing spot for all the mamas out there struggling in their solo parenting roles. If that’s you, I want you to know you are safe, seen, and supported here. This is a judgement-free, real talk, value packed, and encouraging community. You are not alone in this season of hardship, and you will come out the other side, brighter and stronger than ever!
I’m your host Heidi Chirkoff, I know what you need, because I needed it too. It wasn’t that long ago that I was having an extremely hard time in the day-to-day – with two small boys, one on the way, a strained marriage, and loss of identity/purpose. I felt alone, I felt overwhelmed, I felt resentful, I felt like I was failing as a mother, and I felt guilty for feeling the way I felt. At the time, I didn’t know how to get “unstuck”, but I knew I needed to start making some changes, for myself, my kids, and my marriage – and that it was up to me, and only me, to start making them.
In my desperate search for solutions, I found some things that worked, and some that didn’t. And now that I’ve come out on the other side, I want to share everything I’ve learned. Here at Solo & So Well, we focus on you, the Mom. Even though it may not feel like it right now, you are the anchoring presence in your home, you are the glue, the tone setter, the gatekeeper, the one who knows all, and has actual superpowers. Don’t let that pressure you, let it empower you. A better life starts with you! When you start to rise – the whole family will rise with you.
My mission with this podcast is to be a guiding light, that shows other mamas the way to more joy, peace, and fulfillment – TODAY. It’s time to stop living in auto pilot, in struggle and survival mode – and start taking ownership of your life, one that is full of vibrancy and purpose. You were made for more! I know it, and you know it! We are going to shift you from always having life happen to you – to life starting to happen for you.
Big change starts with itty bitty, consistent, daily action.
Every time you press play on this podcast, the weight of it all gets lighter.
So let’s get started!

Welcome to Adventures in SLIGHTLY Above Average Parenting. I’m Max’s Mom. That’s not the name I was born with but it seems to be the name that is sticking the most these days so I’ve CLAIMED IT! I’m Max’s Mom, the artist formerly known as Candice. I’m the proud mother to a year of the dragon, Gemini, I’ve been here before, 7 going on 45-year-old boy named Maximus Chase. He is the joy of my heart, the source of my greys and the reason I drink occasionally. In addition to being his mom, I consider myself a community mom. What does that mean? That means, I try to be what I had and needed to the village/posse I’ve built. Guess what, you are all part of that posse now. I shall call us, the parent posse. Aside from being a mom, I’ve lived the life of a licensed teacher and actor. This trifecta allows me to be an edutainer. Don’t judge me, I spend most of my time with little people. I’ve realized, parenting is a daily adventure filled with stories. Some funny, some heavy and some that leave you in tears. Kids don’t come manuels and we are all doing our best to get by. As we go on this adventure called parenting, it is better together, in community. So welcome to mine. Join me as I tell stories from my friends, myself and maybe some of yours of the lessons learned on this adventure of slightly above average parenting. Why Slightly above average. Well come on if we did exceptional parenting all the time, they would have nothing to complain to their therapist to in the future. In addition to our weekly stories, I will drop a mini episode with an educational suggestion to help, hopefully, load your parenting toolbox to help your little people make developmental and academic gains. I’m so excited to have you join me on this adventure of SLIGHTLY above average parenting. And if you are having a bad parenting day, remember, the mom on ET had an alien living in her house for days and never even noticed. Just saying. If you’re doing better than that, you are already winning. Be kind to yourself!!!! and I will chat with you soon.

Polly Milton, a 14-year-old country girl, visits her friend Fanny Shaw and her wealthy family in the city for the first time. Poor Polly is overwhelmed by the splendor at the Shaws’ and their urbanized, fashionable lifestyles, fancy clothes and some other habits she considers weird and, mostly, unlikable. However, Polly’s warmth, support and kindness eventually win her the hearts of all the family members. Six years later, Polly comes back to the city to become a music teacher.

I was raised by an old school lady that told me I had to be better, do better and work harder than other people to get the same opportunity based on the color of my skin. I wasn’t allowed to explore, nor was I given the space to fail or make mistakes. I was taught to stay quiet, not draw any attention to myself and not ask questions. Times have changed, and so has the way Black Moms want to raise our children. Lots of us feel this way, but change can be challenging. It is always nice to have those people in your corner who will hold you accountable, cheer you on and offer you support. Being open and honest and giving some life’s lessons learned. We can’t become better if we aren’t willing to learn and own past mistakes and past life’s struggles. I lay it all out no filter no disrespect intended. Why not learn from someone who’s been through it.
