“Growing Up Poor in Irish Boston” is a podcast series, colored with humor, nostalgia and pathos. It’s about a Boston tenement kid, born in 1939, clawing his way out of poverty by being hard-working, creative, persistent, entrepreneurial and by taking risks often. There are also stories of my later life in Boston, Cambridge and New England. If you like old Boston stories or Irish-American stories or old Cambridge stories, this is your podcast. If you like Pull-Yourself-Up-By-The-Bootstrap type stories and/or down-to-earth philosophy with a Roman Catholic, funny and relatively conservative slant, then this is for you.
I am Roderick Patrick Murphy, born into a large, loving Irish family in Boston, widowed after 50+ happy years. So I am now doing some writing, volunteering and learning how to be a bachelor again.

New Leaf is a podcast for mamas (and mama-supporters) exploring the practical, emotional and sometimes messy side of getting ‘Back to Work’ after having had a baby, with a particular focus on pre- and post-baby identity with its seismic changes and transitions.
Most societies and workplaces still do not adequately support women in their motherhood journeys.
New Leaf aims to generate conversation around improving the motherhood journey, from pregnancy to returning to work, to build solidarity, happiness and confidence in listeners.
Professional Coach Laetitia Gordon-Furse interviews incredible ladies from all over the world to find out quite how they managed their returns, sharing their own challenges and vulnerabilities, funny stories and anecdotes, but also personal struggles and solutions to the major life change of becoming a mama and embracing their new identity.
WHO’S IT FOR?
This podcast is for anyone who’s feeling uncomfortable or nervous about the transition back to work, or confused about the change they’ve experienced in their new identity as a Mama. It’s also for lovely people who want to better support the mamas in their lives through empathy and understanding. It’s a non-filtered, imperfect, view of what it is all about.

Anna kent, midwife, humanitarian and single mum of 5 year old Aisha joins me today on the season 3 finale of new leaf podcast.
I found out about Anna after my mum pointed me in the direction of a BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour broadcast featuring Anna and her book which is out now, Frontline midwife. I knew pretty soon from the sheer length of text my mum sent about her that she was not one to miss, and after I listened I realised that to have her as my final guest was non negotiable. I am always quite careful about whom I choose to close the series, and I was really stuck as who to choose. Anna however did not disappoint.
Anna Kent spent her late twenties in war-zones, nursing, midwifing, and in her words – witnessing. Witnessing the amazing successes they had, with the often sparse and scant resources available, but also the horrors of war. Anna delivered babies by head-torch, project managed maternal health units for thousands of people, and faced life and death stories on a daily basis with medecins sans frontiers, or Doctors Without Borders. I was absolutely riveted, and I know you will be too. Since she was a little girl, Anna felt a deep sense of injustice at the hunger, violence and intense healthy inequalities faced all around the world. The moment she got a chance to do something about it, she did, and it was this decision that set in motion her professional and very personal journey to where she is now.

The Master Key was one of Baum’s earliest full length fantasy books for children, published in 1901 just one year after The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The protagonist, Rob, while experimenting in his workshop, accidentally summons up an electrical fairy who presents him with electrical devices so advanced as to seem magical. His gifts include a flying contraption, a stun gun, and something resembling an omniscient portable TV set. Rob travels the world, rendering assistance to European heads of state and narrowly escaping disaster at the hands of “primitive” cannibals, Turks and Tatars, pirates, and evil scientists who try to steal his inventions. It’s great fun, despite the occasional use of racial stereotypes that reflect the values of its time.

Compiled by an American missionary, West African Folk Tales by William H Barker is a delightful collection of folk tales from Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania and other countries along the west coast of Africa. These stories spread in various forms to other countries like the West Indies, Suriname, the Netherland Antilles, etc and can be still heard today among the people of these countries. West African Folk Tales is a wonderful read for both young people and older readers alike. The stories are charmingly retold. Most of them are about Anansi, the trickster god of the West African people. He is worshiped as the god of all stories and often takes the form of a spider, which is considered to be very cunning. Anansi the Spider sometimes has a human face, wears clothes or assumes human form but keeps his eight legs. The first story in this book tells of how the Anansi tales originated. In the olden days, goes the tale, all stories were only about Nyankupon the chief of gods. But Anansi the Spider felt that he should be the hero of all stories. He goes to the chief and demands that he should be made the hero, whereupon the chief sets some conditions for Anansi to fulfill before he can call himself a hero. How the clever Spider achieves this forms the rest of this entertaining tale. The Anansi tales are supposed to have originated in Ghana and it is among the Ashanti people of Ghana that they are most popular. However, they remained an oral tradition, passed on from generation to generation, and Anansi himself was reputed to be a skillful speaker and teller of stories. Though Anansi is quite smart, he uses his cleverness to trick others and sometimes he himself meets a bad end! This book contains 18 Anansi stories and 17 others about different animals like leopards, tigers and elephants. There are also stories about various trees and plants. The Anansi tales are closely linked to Uncle Remus’ Brer Rabbit tales and Anansi’s character bears a strong resemblance to the tricky rabbit. The original edition of West African Folk Tales has some beautiful illustrations which would appeal to young readers. This collection was first published in Lagos in 1917. William H Barker was a missionary and the principal of a government school in Accra. The book was coauthored by Cecilia Sinclair and will certainly provide hours of entertainment for both parents and children.
