    Parenting Beyond the Headlines

    Parenting Beyond the Headlines

    by

    Since Jul 13, 2018 20:08 UTC

Educator and author, Amy Alamar. EdD and award-winning journalist, Sarah Cody combine their expertise in education and news reporting to bring you a show that helps you understand what’s going on in the news and how it affects your family. Terrorist attacks, sex scandals, and stories of children separated from parents are enough to make you want to turn off the news and shelter your family. But, talking about these current topics helps you to share your own perspective and support your children in developing theirs. They’re bound to hear something through the grapevine (or their preferred social media), so why not help them navigate. With the addition of special guests, we can dig deep into current events and help you unpack it.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

    by

    Since Sep 24, 2020 00:00 UTC

One of the most delightful and enduring classics of children’s literature, The Secret Garden by Victorian author Frances Hodgson Burnett has remained a firm favorite with children the world over ever since it made its first appearance. Initially published as a serial story in 1910 in The American Magazine, it was brought out in novel form in 1911. The plot centers round Mary Lennox, a young English girl who returns to England from India, having suffered the immense trauma by losing both her parents in a cholera epidemic. However, her memories of her parents are not pleasant, as they were a selfish, neglectful and pleasure-seeking couple. Mary is given to the care of her uncle Archibald Craven, whom she has never met. She travels to his home, Misselthwaite Manor located in the gloomy Yorkshire, a vast change from the sunny and warm climate she was used to. When she arrives, she is a rude, stubborn and given to stormy temper tantrums. However, her nature undergoes a gradual transformation when she learns of the tragedies that have befallen her strict and disciplinarian uncle whom she earlier feared and despised. Once when he’s away from home, Mary discovers a charming walled garden which is always kept locked. The mystery deepens when she hears sounds of sobbing from somewhere within her uncle’s vast mansion. The kindly servants ignore her queries or pretend they haven’t heard, spiking Mary’s curiosity. The Secret Garden appeals to both young and old alike. It has wonderful elements of mystery, spirituality, charming characters and an authentic rendering of childhood emotions and experiences. Commonsense, truth and kindness, compassion and a belief in the essential goodness of human beings lie at the heart of this unforgettable story. It is the best known of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s works, though most of us have definitely heard of, if not read, her other novel Little Lord Fauntleroy. The book has been adapted extensively on stage, film and television and translated into all the world’s major languages. In 1991, a Japanese anime version was launched for television in Japan. It remains a popular and beloved story of a child’s journey into maturity, and a must-read for every child, parent, teacher and anyone who would enjoy this fascinating glimpse of childhood. Chaos N’ Cookies

Following the crumbs in the chaos is a full time job. As a busy mom of three and keeping it weird in Austin, Texas, it’s safe to say that my life is never boring. In addition to running my coaching business as C’N’C’s CEO, I’m a certified coach for a premier virtual fitness and nutrition program helping others feel better while sustaining a healthy lifestyle. My mom and dad are thrilled that I’m putting my Exercise Science degree to good use. Along with my experience training pro athletes, S.W.A.T. members, and a high school football team, I gained 10+ years experience as the Director of Marketing building multiple court reporting companies. Lastly, I am a published writer, Content Coordinator, and Account Executive for a publication by Best Version Media. They even gave me a monthly “How to” column where I teach others how to be more self-sufficient with common household tasks. Every woman should know how their home functions and what to do if something malfunctions, man or no man. With my husband on the road, searching “How To” on the internet has transformed me into a “Mommy MacGyver”. “I don’t know how you have the time.” “You’re like a Supermom!” These are common things that people say, but the truth is that life hasn’t always been easy or pretty. Even with the bumps, I always try to find the humor in everything because laughter is good for the soul and you should never take life too seriously….where’s the fun in that?

Every mom wants to be a good mom but how many times a day do we question this?! We have been conditioned to believe that there are rules for being a good mom but I say your definition is the only one that matters. As a mom with four kids with neurodiversity and a background in education, I believe every child has gifts and talents of genius. I also see life’s unexpected trials as chances for us to grow in our strength, love, and connection as a family. Escape from your “bad mom” soundtrack each week to listen in for inspiration on all the mom things, whether neurodiversity is in your family or not. Get the go ahead to have way more fun without guilt, hear new perspectives on old problems, and finally feel like you know what you’re doing as a mom.

    by

    Since Mar 18, 2021 22:07 UTC

A podcast by, for, and about moms and those who love them. This is a show devoted to calling out the idealism and perfection that our society places on mothers, while also discussing the often taboo topics that come with transitioning into motherhood. It’s time for us to stop beating around the bush or hiding our struggles so that we can be seen, heard, and way less alone. There’s no one right way to be a mother, there is only YOUR right way. Join me, Alissa Alter | women’s health expert & motherhood advocate to share our stories, let go of mythical expectations, and write our own rules. Also– can we all agree that showering, going to the bathroom, and being by yourself are NOT luxuries, but basic needs for us to not only survive, but thrive? I think it’s time.
