The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling

The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling

    by

    Since Dec 23, 2023 00:00 UTC

Originally written for his young daughter Josephine, who died tragically aged six, The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling is a collection of short stories which were published separately in magazines before being compiled into a book. The stories are in the form of fables, where animals communicate and speak to each other as humans do and the purpose of each story was to convey a moral or message to the reader. Modern readers would be more familiar with the Disney animated version in which Mowgli the little “man-cub” is raised by wolves. As he grows, he is trained by denizens of the jungle like Bagheera the panther, Baloo the bear and Kaa the snake. The dreaded tiger Sher Khan is a diabolical villain, feared by all. However, the book is quite different from the Disney film which tends to romanticize some of the characters and demonize others! The original Jungle Book includes the delightful Riki Tiki Tavi tales about a valiant and clever mongoose who protects his friends from the dangerous snakes of the jungle. Contrary to the film version again, only a few of the stories are about Mowgli. What strikes the reader is the sense of wonder and magic that Kipling evokes in these stories about the mysterious jungle and its inhabitants. The writer’s brilliant skills with the English language are another feature that makes the book such a reading pleasure. Interspersed with delightful poems, this is indeed the perfect choice for a read-aloud with your kids! First published in book form in 1894, the original edition contained beautiful illustrations by Rudyard’s father, John Lockwood Kipling, an artist and art teacher who spent much of his career in India. It was here that Kipling first heard Indian folk tales and was inspired to recreate his versions of them for his own children. The Jungle Book also gained a great reputation for being a “moral story” and Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouts movement requested permission from Kipling to use many of the book’s situations and characters as motivational resources. The leader of a Scout pack was dubbed “Akela” after the warrior wolf of the Free People as wolves are called in the Jungle Book. Kipling was a journalist who covered several wars like the Boer War in South Africa. His extensive body of work includes the famous Just So Stories, Kim and several volumes of short stories, articles, essays and poetry. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907 and till date, remains the youngest to have won the prestigious award. Today, though his reputation stands dimmed as he is seen as one of the “prophets of Imperialism” the magic of his words cannot be denied. The Jungle Book is a classic that indeed belongs on every bookshelf!

    Better Animal Handling

    by

    Since Oct 26, 2019 21:00 UTC

Humans have domesticated and handled animals for 14,000 years. Modern times have brought urbanization and technology which have caused a drastic decline in human-animal interactions. As a result, the knowledge of how to properly handle, restrain, and house animals is in decline. In Better Animal Handling, C.B. Chastain, veterinarian and professor emeritus, describes effective, humane animal handling with emphasis on safety measures to prevent injury and the transmission of zoonotic diseases.

    Good Dog Happy Baby

    Good Dog Happy Baby

    by

    Since Jul 3, 2017 10:26 UTC

Are you expecting? Or do you already have a toddler? How should you prepare your beloved dog for the arrival of your little one?
In this weekly podcast, you’ll get expert guidance from bestselling author and dog trainer Michael Wombacher.

In each episode of Good Dog Happy Baby, Mike answers key questions about how best to prepare your dog psychologically, emotionally, and physically for the big changes that come with having a baby.

As you may know, dog ownership has surged in the past 30 years. At the same time, more couples are delaying parenthood.
At the juncture of these trends, dogs have become surrogate children. Having showered love and affection on their pet(s), too few parents consider the impact of a new baby human on their “fur baby”. Nor do they think about how to prepare their “first baby” for this sudden change.

To the extent they consider the situation at all, they mostly assume all will be well.

This assumption is often a big mistake. Over the years I’ve had numerous clients who dismissed my warnings about potential dog-baby problems, only to deeply regret it later. That’s why I created the Good Dog Happy Baby book, e-course, and podcast.

How To Introduce A Fish Into Aquarium?

How To Introduce A Fish Into Aquarium?

    by

    Since Apr 12, 2021 10:11 UTC

How to introduce new fish into the aquarium: steps to follow.

    1. Prepare the aquarium correctly

Before bringing any fish home, the first thing you should do is properly condition their habitat.

To do this, you must purchase the appropriate aquarium, with the corresponding size for the amount of fish you want to have in it and the species. Take into account if you are going to add more in the future when selecting the fish tank.

Once you have it, place it in a flat place, where it cannot fall or there is no risk of children or pets throwing it to the ground. Lighting (no direct sunlight) and being away from drafts is also very important.

Add decorative elements to the aquarium so that the fish can swim among them and hide, but without passing you: they must have space to move freely!

Remember that depending on the type of fish you want, the water temperature can be hotter or colder. You have to control this with the thermometer, monitor the pH and add all those conditioners that allow the life in the water of the fish to be healthy (filters, chemicals …).

Prepare all this a few weeks before introducing the fish.

    2. Choose the fish and take them home

When it comes to acquiring fish, advice is very important. Not all fish get along well with each other, so whether it is the first time you are going to introduce a fish in the aquarium, or if you already have some, it is best to consult a professional.

When they have indicated which ones are correct for you, it is ideal that you take them home two by two (if they are the first), adding a new pair per week, until you complete the number of little fish you want to have.

The fish are usually delivered in a transparent bag that can be placed in a very clean box so that the lights do not disturb the animal during transport.

The trip should be as short as possible and without shocks that cause discomfort to the fish.

    3. Don’t put them in at once

One of the most important points on how to introduce new fish to the aquarium is acclimatization.

This means that we must not suddenly introduce the fish into the aquarium from the bag, but must carry out a process in which the water in both containers is equal in temperature and other conditions.

How can we do this? Well, following these steps:

Place the bag in the water, hooked so that it does not fall. Make sure the bag is not dirty on the outside.
When about 15-20 minutes have passed in which the bag has been floating, take a glass of water from the fish tank and put it in the bag. In this way they will become even more accustomed to the temperature and chemicals of the water where they will live.
About 10-15 minutes later, the previous step is repeated.
After another 10 minutes, the fish can be caught from the bag with a net and left in the aquarium. Do not put the water from the bag in the tank.
If fish already live in that habitat and you are going to introduce a new one, the ideal is to turn off or dim the light so that the old fish do not notice their new or new companions and a more relaxed atmosphere is created.
