Today’s Neuroscience, Tomorrow’s History – Professor Roger Ordidge

    by

    Since Aug 27, 2012 12:00 UTC

Supported by a Wellcome Trust Public Engagement grant (2006-2008) in the History of Medicine to Professor Tilli Tansey (QMUL) and Professor Leslie Iversen (Oxford), the History of Modern Biomedicine Research Group at Queen Mary, University of London presents a series of podcasts on the history of neuroscience featuring eminent people in the field: Professor Roger Ordidge studied physics at the University of Nottingham, and went on to obtain his PhD in 1981 under the supervision of Professor Sir Peter Mansfield. He worked on echo-planar imaging, a high speed imaging technique, which helped make Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) possible, and was the first person to generate a moving image of the beating heart. After four years in industry working on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy as related to body metabolism, Professor Ordidge briefly returned to Nottingham in 1986 before taking up a post in the US at Oakland University, Detroit, to study the process of stroke damage. In 1994, he became Joel Professor Physics Applied to Medicine, at UCL, a position which he still holds. His research focuses on the development and application to clinical research of MRI technology and he has patented several of the widely used methods currently used in MRI scanners such as improvements in radio-frequency (RF) slice definition using FOCI RF pulses. He is particularly interested in studying the brain in stroke and in neonatal birth asphyxia.

    by

    Since Oct 29, 2007 17:14 UTC

ReachMD takes an in-depth look at diabetes, a disease identified in nearly 1 in 10 Americans, which upsets the lives of millions more. Even more disturbing, the rates of new cases of diagnosed diabetes have risen almost twofold during the past decade. Nutrition, exercise and genetics are all factors in how the disease affects children, adults and the elderly, but that’s only the beginning. How are surgical options changing the way we think about the disease? How close are we to a cure for Type 1 diabetes? Are there treatment lessons we can take from community-based initiatives abroad? Tune in to gain insights for your practice.

    Frank McCourt

    Frank McCourt

    by

    Since Jun 22, 1999 14:00 UTC

“F. Scott Fitzgerald said there are no second acts in American lives. I think I’ve proved him wrong. And all because I refused to settle for a one-act existence, the 30 years I taught English in various New York City high schools.” Frank McCourt was already retired when he published his first book at age 66. Angela’s Ashes, a memoir of his impoverished boyhood in Limerick, Ireland, shot to the top of the best-seller lists and remained there for over a year. Angela’s Ashes won McCourt the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Biography. It was still topping the paperback lists when McCourt’s second book ‘Tis hit the bookstores, and the best-seller lists. A third bestseller, Teacher Man, recounts his years teaching in the New York City public schools. “After retiring from teaching I wanted a second act, not a rocker in Florida,” McCourt says. After a lifetime of helping young people find their own voices, Frank McCourt has found his own, and millions of readers have found a friend to treasure.
