    Overdrive: Cars, Transport and Culture

    Overdrive: Cars, Transport and Culture

    by

    Since Dec 5, 2014 08:20 UTC

An informed, humorous and irreverent look at motoring and transport from Australia and overseas. Featuring motoring & transport news, road tests, feature interviews & quirky stories. Overdrive is not just for ‘rev heads’ but covers subjects in a manner that reflects on our everyday transport experiences as well as our dreams and aspirations for more exotic transport. Presented by motoring broadcaster David Brown with regular contributors Errol Smith, David Campbell, Brian Smith and Paul Murrell. Overdrive can also be heard across Australia on the community radio network, via podcast on iTunes or via the website at drivenmedia.com.au The relatively recent developments in the electrification of vehicles, most particularly starting in 2000 or so with the Toyota Prius hybrid, did not sell itself on the elegance of its outward appearance. Although the need for environmental considerations is becoming even more critical, hybrids and electric vehicles can no longer look like a science experiment. Later this year, Hyundai will launch in Australia the next generation of their all-electric sedan, the Ioniq. It doesn’t look like a catch-up vehicle, but one that is very futuristic in its design, not only its technology.

    • The new Ioniq 5 – built as an electric car from the ground up
    • A modern looking product
    • By being built as electric cars, vehicles will change shape in the years ahead as they are no longer bounded by the powertrains of old.
    • Ioniq 5 looks modern but pays homage to a futuristic design concept from the past
    • Same power train as the Hyundai Kona but there will be a modular platform
    • There are strong indications they are working on a performance version which will be part of the electric car vision
    • Range anxiety is real but there is a poor understanding of how many cars do not travel great distances.
    • Current electric vehicle buyers are well informed and focused on the broader issue. There is not a situation of people walking into a dealer to buy an internal combustion engine car and being talked into an electric one.
    • The quietness of an electric car can produce a much calmer driving environment.
    • If there is a consistent need for doing long trips then a plug-in hybrid is potential the best of both worlds at the moment. The Ioniq is purely an electric vehicle but plug-in hybrids will be part of the fleet.
    • The first question should be “How will you use the car?” and then “How much range do I need?”
    • Federal Government is not giving incentives at the moment but State governments are being more active.
    • Bill was most struck by how electric vehicles can produce a much more pleasant ride when he rode in a hydrogen bus. It makes it feel like a luxury ride.

    Power: Hugh Hefner

    Power: Hugh Hefner

    by

    Since Jan 4, 2021 14:49 UTC

In a sport famed for money and excess, what does it take to get to the top…and stay there? Rising from a life of hardship and crime, Don King became the most successful boxing promoter the sport has ever seen—and the first Black man to do so. He is his own American Dream. His flamboyant appearance and commanding personality made him a star in and out of the ring, as did his promotion of greats like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, and even America’s musical dynasty, the Jacksons. But his less-than-honest exploits? They made him legendary. Season two of Power tells the story of Hugh Hefner. Who was Hugh Hefner? Centerfold models, Playboy Bunnies, and other women from the Playboy founder’s inner circle, like TV personality and author Holly Madison, tell journalist Amy Rose Spiegel their side of his story. We hear how Playboy changed their lives, for better and for worse. Beyond the bunny tails are darker questions: What actually went on at the notorious Playboy Mansion? How can we square Hefner’s progressive legacy with his abuse of vulnerable people? What can the Playboy saga tell us about sex and power—then and now? Season one of Power tells the story of Ghislaine Maxwell (Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged partner in crime). Everyone’s heard of her, but there’s a shadowy figure who hangs above her who you likely don’t know: her father, media tycoon Robert Maxwell. His rise from nothing to fall… from the deck of his super yacht under mysterious circumstances is straight out of a crime novel. His favourite daughter Ghislaine’s theory: her father was murdered. Power is a Sony Music Entertainment production. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
