The City of God by Saint Augustine of Hippo

The City of God by Saint Augustine of Hippo

    by

    Since Oct 26, 2023 00:00 UTC

Rome having been stormed and sacked by the Goths under Alaric their king, the worshipers of false gods, or pagans, as we commonly call them, made an attempt to attribute this calamity to the Christian religion, and began to blaspheme the true God with even more than their wonted bitterness and acerbity. It was this which kindled my zeal for the house of God, and prompted me to undertake the defense of the city of God against the charges and misrepresentations of its assailants. This work was in my hands for several years, owing to the interruptions occasioned by many other affairs which had a prior claim on my attention, and which I could not defer. However, this great undertaking was at last completed in twenty-two books. Of these, the first five refute those who fancy that the polytheistic worship is necessary in order to secure worldly prosperity, and that all these overwhelming calamities have befallen us in consequence of its prohibition. In the following five books I address myself to those who admit that such calamities have at all times attended, and will at all times attend, the human race, and that they constantly recur in forms more or less disastrous, varying only in the scenes, occasions, and persons on whom they light, but, while admitting this, maintain that the worship of the gods is advantageous for the life to come. In these ten books, then, I refute these two opinions, which are as groundless as they are antagonistic to the Christian religion. But that no one might have occasion to say, that though I had refuted the tenets of other men, I had omitted to establish my own, I devote to this object the second part of this work, which comprises twelve books, although I have not scrupled, as occasion offered, either to advance my own opinions in the first ten books, or to demolish the arguments of my opponents in the last twelve. Of these twelve books, the first four contain an account of the origin of these two cities—the city of God, and the city of the world. The second four treat of their history or progress; the third and last four, of their deserved destinies. And so, though all these twenty-two books refer to both cities, yet I have named them after the better city, and called them The City of God.

Heretics, Who Followed the Sins of Jeroboam (I)

Heretics, Who Followed the Sins of Jeroboam (I)

    by

    Since Nov 4, 2022 08:11 UTC

In the Bible, the people of Israel claim to worship God, but ultimately, following Jeroboam, they were worshipping the golden calves. In fact, more than 2/3 of the history of Israelites was a history of having worshipped the golden calves, thinking them to be God. Ultimately, even now, they continue to go on living without realizing the fact that Jesus Christ, who has come by the gospel of the water and the Spirit, is their true Savior. In spite of it all, there are many Jews who are waiting for their Savior, even now. Then, how is the faith of you who claim to be taking part in Christianity in this New Testament Era? Do you currently believe in and follow God with a proper understanding of Him? If not, aren’t you perhaps worshipping golden calves with a misapprehension of them as God? If you are like that, then you must become aware of the fact that you are worshipping an idol before God like the people of Israel. Then, you must revert back and meet the Lord who has come by the gospel of the water and the Spirit. I am sure that you will be able to believe in the gospel Truth when you truly realize before God what the Truth of the salvation in the gospel of the water and the Spirit is, won’t you? I wish to testify before you the true faith and the Truth under the title, “Heretics, Who Followers the sins of Jeroboam.” By all means, I hope you will be a person of the same faith as that of mine.

    O Pioneers! by Willa Cather

    O Pioneers! by Willa Cather

    by

    Since Dec 4, 2023 00:00 UTC

Published in 1913, O Pioneers! is the first novel in Cather’s Great Plains trilogy and follows the life of its young heroine, Alexandra Bergson, as she fulfills her father’s dying wish to take care of his farm, while also ensuring her brothers are well looked after. Entrusted with a great responsibility, Alexandra is determined to fulfill her father’s wish, as she goes on to prove her skills as a thriving farmer even though the task comes with a hefty price on her happiness. In addition, the novel concentrates on the conflict between universal and individual desires, while also exploring themes including thwarted love, passion, responsibility, individuality, life on the prairie, and the struggles faced by pioneers. Set in the late 19th century in the fictional town of Hanover, Nebraska, the novel dedicates much of its attention to the details surrounding the lives of the Bergson family, as they strive to carve out their own piece of haven in America. Unfortunately, John Bergson’s dreams are cut short when he finds himself on his deathbed, choosing to entrust his farm and its preservation to his daughter, Alexandra. Considered to be more resolute and emotionally stronger than her three brothers, Alexandra quickly confirms her father’s beliefs as she brings astute decisions concerning the prosperity of their family and land. Subsequently, the story shifts to sixteen years in the future, with all the Bergson siblings grown up and leading separate lives. Sacrificing her personal happiness in the process, Alexandra devotes much of her time to securing the prosperity of the farm and ensuring the well-being of those around her. Left to bear the weight of her family’s actions, Alexandra is faced with quite the dilemma, having to choose whether to continue her life of sacrifice and loneliness, or finally choose the life that has been denied to her due to inherited responsibilities. Featuring a compelling set of characters, Cather clearly highlights each of their strengths and faults, while also interweaving their contrasting characteristics into an enthralling plot that is realized through Cather’s brilliant combination of evocative description and imagery. Moreover, Cather presents a unique and realistic portrayal of pioneer life, while at the same time capturing the essence of nineteenth-century America, which in turn adds historical value to the piece.

Book of Hebrews -Spirituality of The 10 Commandments (Dr Mack 2004)

Book of Hebrews -Spirituality of The 10 Commandments (Dr Mack 2004)

    by

    Since Dec 2, 2021 20:36 UTC

The apostle Paul told us that The Law (10 commandments) is “spiritual”. Jesus said that to hate is the same as murder. The Scriptures teach us that, Christians, as the bride of Christ -commit adultery when we become “one” with the world. To take God’s name in vain means to call ourselves “Christians” when we are not. These truths and so many more are explained in detail in this great study of the book of Hebrews from 2004 by Dr Mack Griffin at Emmanuel Theological Seminary.

    George Ezra & Friends

    by

    Since Feb 8, 2018 13:12 UTC

Had it not been for the introduction of podcasts into my life, my second album could well have been ready six months sooner. Who knows, maybe even seven. The world of podcasts has been an extremely welcome and comforting distraction from reality. Listening to interesting people talk to other interesting people about interesting things. New ideas, old ideas, thinkers and dreamers. A lot of the shows I enjoy are comedians talking to other comedians, candid accounts of their experiences in the industry they work in. I find them inspiring and often relieving. To hear entertainers, talk so openly about the highs and the lows of performance feels like something that hasn’t really happened before and, personally, as a performer, it’s something that really helps me. I began looking for musical equivalents: honest, long form conversations between two musicians, the unquestionable highs of creating and performing, alongside honesty regarding things they have struggled with along the way. At the time of digging, nothing jumped out at me. I sat on the idea for some time before finally plucking up the courage to try and do it myself and went out and purchased the gear necessary for me to travel and record at the drop of a hat. So far it has been better than I could have ever imagined. I travel to my guests wherever they may be and it is just the two of us in the room. After the initial ten minutes of chat we both loosen up and start to share stories and experiences from our time on the road. What started as a labour of love and somewhat of a passion project is shaping up to be one of the best and fulfilling projects I’ve ever been a part of. I hope you find it as interesting and fun to listen to, as it was to make.
