Welcome to the Wellness Connection MD podcast, where Dr. McMinn and Coach Lindsey become your partners on a quest for optimal wellness. As our population ages, and we are faced with an alarming epidemic of chronic diseases. Clearly, the current drug-based sick-care model of healthcare is simply not working. The cost of healthcare is skyrocketing for patients, and for our society at large, and legions of patients with chronic diseases are falling through the cracks of modern medicine. These people are often desperate to be heard, to be taken seriously, and to have their concerns adequately addressed. On the Wellness Connection MD podcast we will focus more on a preventive, lifestyle-based, functional, and integrative approach to optimal wellness. We challenge the medical community to “think different,” while remaining evidence-based, while opening our minds to other viable therapies beyond drugs and surgery. We also advocate that this shift in thinking be accompanied by a renaissance of “loving kindness” in healthcare. Providers and patients would all benefit.
We are hopeful for the future of health care. Patients are demanding a new approach, and big medicine is beginning to listen. Fifteen years ago when we embarked on this journey integrative and functional medicine were hardly on the radar screen. However we now see that many of our most esteemed healthcare institutions have dedicated integrative or functional programs, such as Harvard, Duke, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Vanderbilt, UCSF and many others. Integrative and functional medicine are gaining credibility across the nation and around the world. We will all be better off for the change.

Lea Rachel is launching her new book Seeking Forgiveness.
“Seeking Forgiveness,” Lea Rachel’s new novel, tells the story of interracial adoption in the US today from the perspective of a white mother who adopts a Black son and has no idea what she is doing.
The story begins when Rachel’s son Miles is arrested by the police in the middle of the night.
Over the next eight hours, as Rachel tries to get her son out of detention, she recounts their life together and the events that led them to this point. As a result, Rachel struggles with her competence as a mother, questions the viability of interracial adoption, and worries that her son will never forgive her for her mistakes as his adoptive mother.

The novel is based on Lea’s journey as the Caucasian mother of an adopted African American son Lea, a professor at The University of Missouri-St. Louis can address the issues raised in her compelling novel.

Lea Rachel comes from a literary background. Her grandmother, Beki Bahar, is an internationally published Turkish author and poet and her uncle, Anthony Kosnik, co-authored a well-respected liturgical book in the 1970s. Lea has been writing short stories since she was a little girl, and when she entered college at The University of Michigan, she was initially a creative writing major. At the University of Michigan, she had two short stories published in competitive University of Michigan literary publications, Prism and The Write Stuff. She crafted and honed her writing skills there.
Fearing starvation (and perhaps, to be honest, literary rejection), Lea switched her major in the middle of college to economics and pursued a Ph.D. in the subject over the next ten years.
Along the way, she traveled extensively to Turkey, Thailand, Peru, China, and Europe, gathering experiences and writing short stories.
Over the last few years, she has established her economics career as a professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis so that her bills can be safely paid, while in her free time, she has spent every available moment working on her writing.
The one time Lea entered a writing competition, the 72nd Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition, she placed fifth (out of over 18,000 entries) in the personal essay category for Insidious Red Parasite. Recently, Lea has been an attendee at the University of Iowa summer writing workshops, and she has also become a member of a dedicated and enthusiastic St. Louis writing group.
