S-Town is a podcast hosted by Brian Reed from Serial Productions, a New York Times company. The story follows a man named John who despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it. He asks Brian to investigate the son of a wealthy family who’s allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. A Handy Guide for Beggars, Especially Those of the Poetic Fraternity

A Handy Guide for Beggars, Especially Those of the Poetic Fraternity

    by

    Since Feb 27, 2009 05:51 UTC

“Being sundry explorations, made while afoot and penniless in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. These adventures convey and illustrate the rules of beggary for poets and some others.” Published in 1919, this is poet Vachel Lindsay’s description of his travels “afoot and penniless” across the southern and eastern United States, staying with strangers, reciting or trading poetry for dinner, and along the way, describing in stories and poetry, mostly stories, the people and places he encountered. Think “Travels With Charlie,” minus the dog and the Winnebago, and much, much earlier. From the Dedication and Preface: “There are one hundred new poets in the villages of the land. This Handy Guide is dedicated to the younger sons of the wid earth, to the runnaway boys and girls getting further from home every hour, to the prodigals still wasting their substance in riotous living, be they gamblers or blasphemers or plain drunks; to the heretics of whatever school to whom life is a rebellion with banners; to those who are willing to accept counsel if it be mad counsel.” If you remember the 1960’s, you’ll feel right at home. If you wish you remembered the 1890’s, here’s your chance. You might also feel right at home, at that.

Great Big Treasury of Beatrix Potter by Beatrix Potter

Great Big Treasury of Beatrix Potter by Beatrix Potter

    by

    Since Dec 15, 2023 00:00 UTC

Whether you’re a parent or a child, a young reader or an older one, the Great Big Treasury of Beatrix Potter is indeed just that – a treasure chest of delightful, charming little stories full of animals and people. Beatrix Potter today has spawned a whole industry of merchandise, games and theme parks, but the stories remain as fresh and sparkling as they were when they first came out in 1901. The Great Big Treasury contains three collections compiled into one enchanting volume – The Giant Treasury of Peter Rabbit, Further Tales of Peter Rabbit and The Giant Treasury of Beatrix Potter. It contains nineteen tales featuring a troop of unforgettable characters. Peter Rabbit, the mischievous and rebellious young fellow, is the hero of many a tale, along with his goody-goody sisters Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-tail. Their long-suffering mother strives to keep Peter out of mischief and Mr. McGregor’s tempting garden filled with luscious fruits and vegetables. The stories sparkle with Beatrix Potter’s amusing lines which have old Mrs. Rabbit cautioning her children against trespassing into the garden, “Your father had an accident there. He was put into a pie!” Other memorable characters include Squirrel Nutkin, who is a most impertinent fellow, Peter Rabbit’s cousin Benjamin Bunny, two bad mice, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Tailor Simpkin, a frog called Mr. Jeremy Fisher and many more. The stories are a mixture of moral fables and fascinating descriptions of nature and Victorian childhood naughtiness. Peter Rabbit’s stories have been translated into nearly forty languages and adapted for stage, film and television, converted into animated cartoons and toys, children’s room accessories, furnishings and wall-paper. In fact, Beatrix Potter herself was the first person to realize the commercial value of merchandising. Her illustrations for the stories show her as a gifted artist and nature conservationist who lived in the picturesque Lake District in England. The stories are distinctive in the way they connect directly with childhood imagination and the writing style is particularly suited to being read aloud – an activity which has been enjoyed by generations of both parents and children the world over.

A Dog’s Tale by Mark Twain

A Dog’s Tale by Mark Twain

    by

    Since Nov 26, 2020 00:00 UTC

A sentimental short story praised for its moving plot and condemnation of scientific experimentation on animals, Mark Twain efficiently delivers a truly captivating piece. First appearing in Harper’s Magazine in 1903, A Dog’s Tale was later published as a pamphlet for the National Anti-Vivisection Society. The tale focuses on the life of Aileen, a misunderstood dog who experiences the ups and downs of life, while cruelly subjected to suffering because of the shallow belief of her inferiority amidst humans. The story is told from the point of view of Aileen Mavourneen, a self-proclaimed Presbyterian, whose mother is a Collie, and father is a St. Bernard. The story begins with Aileen’s life as a puppy, living together with her mother until she is later taken in by a loving family. Life at her new home seems perfect, as she lives in a well adorned house, and has an open space where she is free to roam and play with other dogs. Subsequently, the household welcomes the arrival of the owner’s baby and Aileen’s puppy, which adds joy to the home. However, the idyllic days are brought to a halt when a terrible accident occurs, prompting Aileen to risk her own life to save her owner’s infant from harm’s way. Despite the heroic deed, Aileen is rewarded with the utmost brutality that changes her life forever. A compelling piece of literature, A Dog’s Tale efficiently depicts the dark and inconsiderate nature of humans, which is contrasted with the benign and loyal nature of dogs. Guaranteed to make one’s heart tingle, the short story evokes many powerful emotions throughout its short, yet overpowering pages. Twain successfully creates a piece that will captivate its audience, leaving them incapable of feeling indifferent to such a powerful message presented in the piece. Furthermore, Twain’s effectiveness to illustrate the inhumane and inconsiderate treatment of animals is heightened by allowing the audience to enter the mind of a dog and observe and feel life on the other side of the coin. Supplying a generous serving of humor, irony, love, cruelty, and heartfelt moments, A Dog’s Tale encourages humanity to take a step back and carefully reflect on their actions and reconsider the roles played by both humans and animals in society. Learning From Our Legends

    Learning From Our Legends

    by

    Since Mar 22, 2023 14:51 UTC

    Salam guys!

Join us on this podcast where we discuss everything -from our everyday issues as Muslim women in the West, to using our deen as a guide to navigate them.

And who better to take as examples than the people before us, such as the prophets, companions and the righteous individuals who came after them?

By redefining who our role models are, we can redirect our focus to seeking the pleasure of Allah and getting to Jannah, as the Prophet(ﷺ) said, “Whoever travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise.”

    (Muslim 2699)

May Allah bless this journey, and allow it to be of benefit to us all,

    Ameen!

Your hosts: Layla & Leena 😉

    by

    Since May 9, 2018 18:20 UTC

An audiojournal documenting my journey to become a TechnoWizard (or perhaps a TechnoAnarchoShaman). I want to help bring forth better futures for all. That means creating a world of worlds that is more sustainable, ecologically stable, spiritual, ancestral, accessible, communal, ambitious, magical, and anarchistic. This is a world where we are all richer than rich; where all needs are met, and we instead solve better problems on a grander scale.
