The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain

The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain

    by

    Since Dec 14, 2019 00:00 UTC

A poor young boy from the slums of London watches a royal procession pass, with the youthful Prince of Wales riding at its head. He ventures too close and is caught and beaten by the Prince’s guards. However, the young royal stops them and invites the vagrant to the palace. Here the two boys sup alone and are stunned to discover that they bear a startling resemblance to each other. The Prince is Edward, long awaited heir of the monarch, Henry VIII, while the vagrant is Tom Canty, the son of a thief and a beggar. Edward is fascinated by the free and unfettered life that Tom leads, while Tom is overawed by the wealth and luxury of the palace. The boys decide to switch clothes. From here, adventure begins for both of them! First published in 1881, The Prince and The Pauper by Mark Twain is the famous American writer and humorist’s first foray into historical fiction. Set in the sixteenth century Tudor court of Henry VIII, the book is reputedly Mark Twain’s most carefully plotted novel. Great attention has been paid to setting, dialog and character. Early plot devices are carefully constructed to become invaluable features that carry the story along. Several real historical figures appear in the book. It is also a novel of contrasts. The two boys, born on exactly the same day, have completely different destinies. Before they meet, they each have dreams that are very different from their circumstances. Edward longs to be free to roam the streets at will, unhampered by court protocol and conventions. Tom yearns for security, comfort and the certainty of knowing where his next meal will come from. Twain also explores ideas of conventional wisdom that deem “Clothes Maketh a Man” which implies that appearances are everything. Being a voracious reader of history himself, Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens to give his real name) was able to use some of the material he had absorbed in The Prince and The Pauper. He faithfully renders Tudor English that he also displays in the other books Tom Sawyer and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. The thrilling climax of the novel, which takes place just days before Henry VIII’s death, and the coronation of the new king, is one that brings all the threads of this exciting tale together. The Prince and The Pauper has been widely adapted on screen, stage and television. Comics, animated versions, a Mickey Mouse version and many more have continued to explore this very interesting theme of switched identities. Disney films like Parent Trap, a Barbie version, a film version in Hindi, and several musical adaptations have kept this timeless classic alive. More great books at LoyalBooks.com

    Kim by Rudyard Kipling

    Kim by Rudyard Kipling

    by

    Since Dec 11, 2023 00:00 UTC

Present day readers live in a world that’s emerged from the Cold War and the endless rivalry of the Super Powers but this book goes back and traces the origins of the conflict and mutual antagonism between nations. Kim by Rudyard Kipling is set against the background of the Great Game as it was called the tug-of-war between Britain and Russia for the control of Central Asia. The novel’s action takes place during the Anglo-Afghan Wars of 1839-42. The novel’s sweeping narrative, the depth of character and the sheer historical scale make it a first rate story. Nobel Prize winning author Rudyard Kipling is not much in fashion today. He is considered a relict of Imperialism and the old colonial tradition. Yet, his work remains relevant and incisive even today, in the climate of Neo-Imperialism and the economic and social colonialism practiced by many big powers. As a brilliant and most authentic portrait of Victorian British India, Kim remains unrivaled. It is also a wonderful coming of age story, peopled with remarkable and memorable characters, and traces the young hero’s poignant search for identity, caught as he is between two cultures. Kimball O’Hara (or Kim) lives an itinerant existence in 19th century India, where Imperialism is at its peak. He is the young son of poor Irish parents who are both no more. He survives by running occasional errands for a Pashtun horse-trader called Mahbub Ali in Lahore. Mahbub Ali is actually an undercover agent working for the British. Kim leaves Lahore and joins a Tibetan lama in the quest for a legendary river. Ali meets and recruits Kim to his spy ring, but Kim is rescued by an old friend of his father’s and sent off to study in a good boarding school in Lucknow. He remains in touch with Ali and the Lama. Upon completing his schooling, he is recruited by the British government and enters the Great Game in earnest. The rest of the novel follows Kim’s career and deals with the final choices he has to make in life. Kim is a book that can be read on many levels—a gripping adventure story, a brilliant picture of childhood and a mystical tale of the spiritual traditions of India. For modern readers, the current situation in Afghanistan seems all too close to what is depicted as happening more than a century ago.

Welcome to Just Swayy’n! Seth Hill, Founder of Swayy, and Megan Wilkens, Host and Podcast wiz, will be talking about the entrepreneurial journey of Swayy, our mistakes, the successes and everything in between. We will also be talking about the outdoor industry, the outdoors itself and will even have a few experts of the trade join the show. If you want to know what it’s like to start, run and build an outdoor company or are looking for some motivation to get your next big idea started, then grab a hammock, let it hang and enjoy the show.

Can changing your mind be a strength? What’s the difference between that and flexibility? While Megan is still on the fence about the difference, Sth touts the importance of being able to change directions on a dime.

    On This Episode

    Swayy Update

    – We skipped an update episode =[]
    – Most business concepts apply to life
    – Seth has been training for a triathlon

    – 70-mile bike ride
    – Early morning, minimal sleep
    – By mile 20 he was struggling
    – The discipline required to train has applied to life and business

    – Going to sell out of inventory imminently

    – All marketing is on hold
    – Trying to figure out how to pay off debt
    – Working on a counter sample with the new company
    – May be sharing a booth at a trade show with Premus manufacturer
    – Can trigger Premus production at any time, but currently not for 2 reasons:

    – Don’t want to take the risk
    – Was working on a licensing deal with Legit Camping, but they’ve gone dark

    – Seth spent a lot of time working on the licensing terms
    – Frustrated by the silence
    – “The testing of your faith produces patience”
    – Seth recognizes the need to practice patience but doesn’t want to do it this way
    – If you get to choose how you practice patience, are you really practicing it?

    – Specialty contractor from US Government who supplies Seal teams with outdoor gear contacted Seth about offering Swayy hammocks in their new catalog

    – Want to do a preorder
    – Instant cash if they order
    – Would also spread the name
    – Because it would be batch, they could do custom stuff

    – Lots of little opportunities like this seem to pop up as a glimmer of hope, then fall and don’t work out

    – This may be another one that falls through, but sometimes you need something to keep going

    – Decided to hire someone to prepare taxes this year since things are more complicated
    – Seth wants to do some consulting

    – Specifically wants to work with and on teams
    – He’s gained a lot of varied experience, but not on teams
    – In a personal setting, Seth is a very social person, but when it comes to business he tends to like to do things on his own terms
    – Feels he lacks tact
    – Wants to work on flexing that muscle
    – Self-awareness is the first step, but after that, you have to seek out opportunities to improve
    – Would also help with interpersonal relationships

Changing Your Mind Can be a Strength

    – Blitz scaling – if you have an idea that has potential, jump off a cliff and build as you fall
    – When you move quickly, being able to change your mind is a strength
    – When a company starts out, they usually have a small, innovative team who is searching for something that works

    – Once they find that thing, they often stick with it until it becomes tradition
    – The world continues to change, and they risk getting stuck in the past
    – The established process becomes less applicable

    – Being able to change your mind is a strength because if you get stuck with something that doesn’t work, it can cause analysis paralysis
    – When doing different things, it’s a strength to try it, see if it does what it was intended, and let it go if it isn’t
    – Is changing your mind different from being flexible?

    – If you have a goal in mind, you have to be flexible and try different things to achieve that goal
    – If you change your mind, the goal itself changes

    – The ability to have the leader of an organization change its mind frequently and the organization have enough flexibility to be on board and make it happen is important
    – Enables quicker progress
    – What point are you moving towards if things are always changing?
    – Success and efficiency

    – Usually, you change your mind because something isn’t working
    – Bring in things, mindsets, projects, or processes that push you to the next level
    – The goal is growth

    – Success

    – Personal = happiness
    – Business = monetarily tied, create value

    – Changing your mind is a strength if it leads you towards success
    – Swayy is pivoting from manufacturing potentially towards licensing
    – Seth would like to do Research and Development for other brands
    – An idea is good, being able to bring that idea to fruition is good, but interpersonal relationships are what allows things to move quickly and be accomplished
    – It would be awesome to use Seth’s network to do R&D for others, but Swayy has to make a name for itself first
    – Waiting on the breakthrough moment

    – You have to have some recognition before people take you seriously
    – You have to prove to people you’re worth it
