Take Me Home – Pet Adoption and Animal Rescue – Pets & Animals on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)

    by

    Since Apr 29, 2008 22:29 UTC

Take Me Home is an animal & pet adoption and rescue podcast. When you’re looking to add a pet into your life, consider adopting a homeless animal . When you adopt a rescued pet, you are giving an animal a second chance at a new life. You also are bringing a new family member into your home, so it’s not a decision you should take lightly. It’s easy to look at pictures and find a cute dog or cat. But as with people, looks aren’t everything. Having a good understanding a dog or cat’s personality before you adopt is an important key to selecting the right pet for you. Join host Angela Marcus as she talks to guests about some of their favorite adoptable pets. These pets might be “diamonds in the rough” that may have been overlooked, but still need a great loving home. We’ll shine the light on these pets and share their personalities, quirks, and stories with you. Because each pet is an individual, we’ll talk about their special needs and offer educational information so you can easily deal with common problems such as a dog that jumps on people or a cat that scratches the furniture. Like people, no pet is “perfect.” But the goal of Take Me Home is to promote happy adoptions. We’ll showcase wonderful pets, tell stories, and even throw some pet education into the mix. So tune in and find out why the “pet adoption option” can be a great way to add a furry companion into your life.

Lesbian mother, writer and internet geek, Josie Henley-Einion talks about life, the universe and everything. An audio blog which leads to a publishing contract. Some of the episodes have explicit content. Note, although I have added ‘knitting’ to the title of the podcast, I have only been talking about knitting since around episode 18, although I’ve been knitting since I was tiny. So if you’re looking particularly for knitting content, no need to listen to the archive, but if you want some interesting and literary content to listen to *while* you’re knitting then go ahead and download the archive! Just a message about the transfer to libsyn and the new episode in the new feed.

These dog podcasts are all about dogs! We’ll talk about dogs large, small and in between; purebred dogs, designer dogs and mixed breeds. When we discuss breeds and mixes, we’ll take a look at what constitutes a breed or a mix; and the traits of some specific breeds. We’ll also take a look at how you can choose the right breed and dog for your family. We will also talk about the joys (and hassles) of living with a dog because when we share our lives with dogs, we are bringing another species into our home and there are often misunderstandings and miscommunications… on Pet Life Radio.

Canine Nation – A Positively Scientific Look At Dogs and Dog Behavior

Canine Nation is about discovery. It’s about getting to what is TRUE about dogs and discarding the myth and lore of living and working with dogs. It’s about challenging what we think we know and asking the dogs to tell us what’s real. It’s about giving science, scientific method, and collected data more credibility than hearsay, anecdotes, and the assertions of self-proclaimed dog ‘experts.’

Canine Nation started as a way to explore the common issues and ideas about dogs and dog training through short, informative essays. The podcast presents these ideas from the personal experiences of dog owners and the creative solutions they have found in behavioral science and positive training methods.

Canine Nation brings the worlds of science and dog ownership together to help promote understanding and satisfying relationships between dogs and their people. Join us for a different look at dogs and our lives with them as we explore the fact and fiction behind the behavior and workings of the canine mind.

The Island of Dr. Moreau by H. G. Wells

The Island of Dr. Moreau by H. G. Wells

    by

    Since Dec 11, 2023 00:00 UTC

One of the first instances of science fiction, Wells’ classic tale published in 1986 examines various controversial philosophical issues active at the time of its publication, most notable being the implications of vivisection and degeneration. Narrated by its everyman protagonist Edward Prendick, the novel follows the events of his stay at a mysterious island, home to ghastly secrets, horrors, and incomprehensible experiences. Furthermore, the novel features innovative themes which have become iconic in the modern science fiction genre, including moral and ethical responsibility, evolution, and man’s interference with the course of nature. The novel begins when Edward Prendick, an educated gentleman is shipwrecked in the middle of nowhere, and is taken aboard a passing ship where he is revived by a man later introduced as Montgomery. The man explains to Prendick that he is headed to a private island where he works, along with the animals on the ship. While on board, Prendick also meets a gruesome brute by the name of M’ling, whom he believes to be Montgomery’s manservant. When Montgomery reaches his destination he initially refuses to accommodate Prendick after the captain demands he leave the ship, but later takes pity on his bleak circumstance and agrees to put him up. The protagonist is subsequently introduced to the cold and intense Dr. Moreau, whom Prendick recognizes as a former distinguished physiologist in London, whose horrific experiments in vivisection had been publicly exposed. Prendick is housed in an outer room of the enclosed compound, and is cautiously locked out of the inner part. Conquered by curiosity, he decides to explore the jungle where he comes face to face with a startling figure that marks the beginning of his task to unearth the shocking truth behind the segregated island and its beastly population. The Island of Dr. Moreau brilliantly intrigues readers with its generous serving of ingenuity, abominable imagery and chilling hypothesis of the possible dangers of scientific progression. A literary classic, the novel imposes many ethical questions still relevant to modern society, and certain to provoke reaction.

If it wasn’t for awesome animal advocates Max A Pooch, the Canine Superhero to the Environment may have ended up like an estimated 5,000 dogs a day; euthanized and his body disposed of in a landfill. Luckily, Max was rescued, and Keith recycled (adopted) Max A Pooch from Orphans of the Storm Animal Rescue when Max was six months old. Keith Sanderson, award winning writer, animal advocacy chronicler, and sidekick to Max A Pooch owes a tremendous debt to those who advocate for animals. In gratitude he dedicates each episode to the awesome animal advocates who improve the welfare and save the lives of millions of companion, domestic, and wild animals yearly.

Each episode Keith takes you into the world of an awesome animal advocate. The guest may be a celebrity, or a leader of national animal advocacy organization, or a passionate soul who is starting a new animal advocacy organization, or an animal advocate volunteer who dedicates herself to making life better for those who can’t speak for themselves.

Whoever the guest is you will be fascinated by the dedication, the courage, and the challenges and triumphs of the people you meet on Awesome Animal Advocates. Make it a point not to miss an episode of Awesome Animal Advocates!

English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs

English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs

    by

    Since Nov 20, 2023 00:00 UTC

Jack the Giant-Killer, Tom Thumb, Goldilocks and The Three Bears, Henny Penny, Dick Whittington, The Three Little Pigs, Red Riding Hood and a host of immortal characters are found in this delightful collection of English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs. The book made its first appearance in 1890 and has remained a firm favorite with both young and old ever since. Fairy tales have traditionally emanated from France and Germany. The famous compilations by La Fontaine and the Brothers Grimm have overshadowed children’s literature for centuries. Yet, many of the stories we recount to children today have an English origin, something that we were unaware of. The author, Joseph Jacobs, was an Australian folklorist and historian who painstakingly compiled them from various sources. In the preface to the first edition he recounts how he collected some stories from the descendants of English immigrants in America and Australia, while he sourced others from English gypsies and old ballads. In many cases he had to rewrite and retell those stories which existed in verse form or in ancient dialects. Older forms of English had to be tailored to suit modern readers, while some of the more objectionable parts had to be discarded. Wicked step-mothers, rampaging giants, damsels in distress, gallant princes and evil spells are some of the staples in this fascinating collection. The author himself states that it was his intention to create a book in which the stories would sound as if they were being narrated by an old nurse or grandmother. Hence, the style is simple, direct and like he states, meant to be read aloud and not visually. The original edition also included extensive notes on the source from which he collected the stories and reference material which is of great interest to folk-lore enthusiasts. Such was the impact of some of the stories that they are referenced in Shakespeare’s plays and provided inspiration for poets like Milton. The highlight of the book for serious readers is the elaborate footnotes which provide a great deal of information about different variants of these stories that are told in other parts of the world. One of the most attractive features in the book are the charming illustrations that accompany each tale. The book is a delightful read for both parents and children. Apart from old favorites, there are many new tales which most people would not have encountered like “Nix Nought Nothing” “The Laidly Worm of Spindleston Heugh” or “The Earl of Mar’s Daughter.”
