Big and White: Life as a Foreigner

Big and White: Life as a Foreigner

    by

    Since Aug 4, 2018 12:00 UTC

You don’t need to sell all your stuff and jump on an airplane to find out what it’s like to live or travel as a foreigner in Asia! Join the oddly and aptly named Big and White, two expat ladies who have already taken the plunge, as they chat about the joys and sorrows of moving to a new culture and sticking out like a sore thumb. Whether it’s discussing the finer points of driving in Kathmandu traffic, chatting about stomach parasites, or reminiscing about the time they accidentally asked for placenta instead of salt, you’re guaranteed to learn something.

Like a homegirl that gushes about her great relationship while you’re sulking over a recent break-up. Either that broad is a self-centered jerk or she lacks some feels smarts. The ability to clock an emotion, control it, and express it authentically. It’s also that ability to be like “oh damn this person is clearly hurting my beeeee” Experts call this emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence: the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. This episode of OGWIT, I discuss being feels smart with dear homie of the show, John! What is emotional intelligence? How is it measured? And what are the benefits of developing this kind of intelligence. As always if you’d like to support OGWIT visit my patreon page! www.patreon.com/ogwitpodcast TRIGGER WARNINGS it gets a little ranty and there’s some potty language as per usjj but otherwise you’re clear to fly! if there are some cringe, heartbreaking, ohnothatsnotokay moments please let me know via email (ogwitpodcast@gmail.com) or IG (@ogwitpodcast) and I’ll do my best to revise the notes. Witch-Hunts and Persecution

    Witch-Hunts and Persecution

    by

    Since Jul 19, 2013 07:11 UTC

In this course, we will use the anthropological approach and methodology to understand witch-hunts and persecution. We start by looking at magic, witchcraft and sorcery and explaining the persistence of related beliefs and practices. As we will see the basic idea of witch persecution is that we have an image of a witch (or sorcerer) and then we pin it on someone. We analyze this image in greater detail. Pinning this image on someone is a process of accusation; we analyze among whom, why and how accusations occur. Finally, we look at some “witch-hunts”—including the Great Witch-hunt, the Salem Trials, and McCarthyism—in greater detail.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by climate change. Climate change is not just about greenhouse gases, technology, policy, and renewable energy. Climate change is a relational problem rooted deep in our culture and the ways we see our world. It comes from our relationships with the ecosystems and people who make up our complex world. It comes from our relationships with ourselves as we navigate an increasingly fast-paced and consumeristic world. Groundwork is a podcast exploring culture’s role in climate change and how it relates to us as individual people. Stay tuned—our first episode is coming soon.
