Historian and journalist Tony Perrottet unearths sexual stories from throughout the ages. The series is modeled on the “secret cabinets” in Victorian museums, where medieval chastity belts, Renaissance pornography and perverse novels by the Marquis de Sade were hidden. Each episode will answer a burning question: How did Napoleon’s penis end up in suburban New Jersey? Are champagne glasses modeled on Marie-Antoinette’s breasts? How did you behave at one of Caligula’s orgies? And what were Casanova’s best pick-up lines?

Myth at the heart of the Roman Empire – for iPad/Mac/PC

    by

    Since Aug 17, 2010 13:31 UTC

How and why did ancient Romans use myth to validate their power? Emperor Augustus legitimised his rule by entwining his own ancestry with the mythical stories of Rome’s foundation, and created a divine aura around Rome as capital of the vast empire. This album visits key emblems associated with Rome’s beginnings: the Forum and the Capitoline Hill with its statue of the she-wolf and Romulus and Remus; the Emperor Augustus’s palace and ceremonial altar, and the 17th Century D’Arpino frescos of foundation myths commissioned by Pope Innocent X to underpin his authority. By monumentalising and glorifying their real and legendary past, Romans painted their own history and this continues to encapsulate Roman identity today. This material forms part of The Open University course A330 Myth in the Greek and Roman worlds.

Archaeology: the science of investigation – for iPad/Mac/PC

    by

    Since Sep 3, 2008 18:44 UTC

Archaeology is about reconstructing the physical past to obtain an understanding of how different civilisations and cultures have evolved over time. In this album, archaeologists from the British Museum explain the scientific processes involved in the discovery, investigation and interpretation of a variety of artefacts, such as skeletons, coins, textiles and metal artefacts unearthed at sites such as the famous Iron Age burial at Sutton Hoo, and Tell es-Sa’idiyeh in Jordan. The album also reveals how amateur archaeologists who use metal detectors contribute to creating a picture of ancient societies. This material forms part of The Open University course SA188 Archaeology: the science of investigation.

    Standing with Stones

    by

    Since Mar 26, 2018 16:00 UTC

We dig deeper so you don’t have to. News, views, people & ideas from the world of prehistoric archaeology. Dr. Tom Booth specialises in analysing ancient DNA from archaeological human remains, teasing out all manner of information from diet and disease to migrations of people in the distant past. In fact, some of Tom’s recent research has even shed light on different funerary practices in the Bronze Age, revealing some fascinating discoveries about ways that people related to, or looked after the remains of their departed. (We first reported on this in a piece in the Prehistory Show #3. https://www.patreon.com/posts/prehistory-show-42771218) Tom’s work is really bringing some clarity to the huge genetic shifts which took place in the major transition periods of the past and it’s remarkable how the study of ancient DNA is opening so many windows into the past. As is so often the case, we could have talked long enough to make half a dozen interviews. We hope you enjoy this one.
