Splunk [Data Fabric Search and Data Stream Processor] 2019 .conf Videos w/ Slides Popular stream processing frameworks (such as Apache Spark Streaming, Apache Flink, and Apache Kafka Streams) make stream processing accessible to developers with language bindings typically in Java, Scala, and Python. These frameworks also include some variant of streaming SQL support to further expand the accessibility of large-scale, low-latency, high-throughput stream processing. What’s missing is bringing the world of stream processing to the Business Intelligence user. At Splunk we’ve built a tool called Splunk Data Stream Processor (DSP) to fill this gap. In this session, Max and Sharon will present the design and architecture of DSP. We will compare it with other stream processing frameworks to show you how DSP allows users to visually author and preview stream processing pipelines and instantly deploy them at scale. We will also present our developer SDKs, allowing third-party custom functions to be developed and integrated for data processing. With its high level abstractions for business users and extensible framework for developers, Data Stream Processor makes stream processing accessible to the widest possible audience.

If Jefferson “Parleyvoo” Pickens had appeared in print just a few years later, he might have been the “Gentle Grifter” instead of the “Gentle Grafter”, the name O. Henry picked for him. His situation as an ethical graft artist gives Jeff an extra impediment in pursuing his craft, but he never wanted it to be too easy. The result is fourteen delightful tales for us and a number of new partners for him. With those partners (he always has at least one) he works his way through a number of confidence games. Some they win, some they lose, some go into extra innings. They seem never to end just the way you figure they will. In the end he conquers almost all, except for the English language, which often seems to defeat him. (Intro by Leslie Walden)

Winner of the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Audio Reporting
The U.S is the only country in the world that allows minors to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Approximately 2,500 juveniles have been effectively sentenced to die in prison—considered “irredeemable” by the state for crimes committed when they were just teenagers. One of them was David Luis “Suave” Gonzalez, who entered prison at 17 expecting to leave in a coffin. Suave tells the story of what happens when your whole world is a prison cell, and you suddenly get a second chance at life. It’s the story of one man’s incarceration and redemption and an unusual relationship between a journalist and a source.
