    Keyboard and Quill

    Keyboard and Quill

    by

    Since Dec 8, 2023 08:00 UTC

Launching in March 2024 | Keyboard and Quill is a playful, narrative podcast exploring data and technology through time. Co-hosted by Silicon Valley database startup veterans, Tim Berglund and Rachel Pedreschi, and inspired by the soundscapes of NPR’s award-winning Radiolab, Keyboard and Quill is a lively look at how we went from the wheel to the smartphone–from the printing press to the complex data ecosystems powering our modern lives. Tim and Rachel interview academics, philosophers, technologists, thought leaders, co-founders, software engineers, and a variety of other Silicon Valley professionals.

    > Keyboard and Quill is produced by StarTree (founded by the original creators of Apache Pinot™), hosts of Real-Time Analytics Summit, and creators of Tim’s podcast for data professionals, “Real-Time Analytics with Tim Berglund.”

    Quantitude

    Quantitude

    by

    Since Oct 21, 2019 20:00 UTC

A podcast dedicated to all things quantitative, ranging from the relevant to the highly irrelevant. Co-hosts Patrick Curran and Greg Hancock talk about serious statistical topics, but without taking themselves too seriously. Think: CarTalk hi-jacked by the two grumpy old guys from the Muppets, grousing about quantitative methods, statistics, and data analysis, all presented to you with the production value of a 6th grade school project. But in a good way.

Representing and manipulating data in computers – for iBooks

Representing and manipulating data in computers – for iBooks

    by

    Since Jun 5, 2011 22:52 UTC

Computers are all around us: in cars, kitchen scales, digital cameras, etc. But how do they store the data they hold? This unit will help you to understand how the data in a computer represents something in the outside world. You will also explore how ASCII code and Unicode are used to control data. This study unit is just one of many that can be found on LearningSpace, part of OpenLearn, a collection of open educational resources from The Open University. Published in ePub 2.0.1 format, some feature such as audio, video and linked PDF are not supported by all ePub readers.

Information Ecosystems: A Sawyer Seminar at the University of Pittsburgh

Information Ecosystems: A Sawyer Seminar at the University of Pittsburgh

    by

    Since Nov 22, 2019 16:34 UTC

The InfoEco project seeks to advance a deeply powerful understanding of where data comes from and how it is used, setting the present moment within a century-long history of information supply and its power-laden consequences. At a moment when societies are in urgent need of guidance to navigate rapidly shifting digital terrain, we are coming together to build a deep understanding of the social and political life of data. In the 2022-2023 Academic Year, we are proud to present a series of podcasts documenting the Data Science 4 Social Justice (DS4SJ) project here at the University of Pittsburgh. One of Pitt’s goals is to leverage knowledge—through teaching, research, and community service—for society’s gain. The dominance of the digital sphere, the upheaval of civic life, and the role of technology in accelerating systemic inequality create an unprecedented opportunity to apply “use-driven data science” for social impact. This year, we will hear from numerous members of this project, from Pitt and beyond, about the ways that data science can facilitate a more equitable society.
