Technology—even when “sufficiently advanced”—isn’t magic. Algorithms aren’t spells cast by programmers. When we imbue tech with mystical powers, we lose sight of the human factors, from economics to culture, and politics, that shape how it’s actually designed and used. Does Not Compute is a podcast about technology, people, and power brought to you by the Center for Information, Technology, & Public Life (CITAP) at UNC-Chapel Hill. At CITAP, we study technology as it’s tangled up in our lives and societies. On Does Not Compute, we’ll pry into the black boxes and get to know the people behind the code to understand technology platforms in context. Together, we’ll explore how old inequities get reinvented on new platforms, how unexpected communities unite for good (and harm), and how media manipulators play on our identities and emotions to spread lies. If we want to fix our relationship to technology, we have to understand what’s broken first. Let’s dig in.

To understand the partisanship and bitterness of American politics today, you have to consider what happened in 1994. Steve Kornacki steps back from the Big Board to tell the origin story of the 1994 Republican “revolution,” the midterm election when the GOP took the House majority for the first time in four decades. It was set in motion by Georgia Congressman Newt Gingrich, who — over the course of 15 years — pushed Republicans in a direction of confrontation and conservatism. Steve talks with Newt’s allies and adversaries about backroom strategy sessions and dramatic battles on the House floor. As yet another midterm threatens to upend the political landscape, Kornacki hears echoes of 1994 everywhere.

Originally recorded in Iraq in 2006 and later in Fort Campbell, KY and in Eugene, OR in 2007. (I use the url “unbossed” on tumblr.) [itunes pic]
While rooting around in my old Tuff Box, I came across a battered thumb-drive. Wiping off the thin layer of dust (almost certainly from Iraq) revealed “WIB” written on it in Sharpie. Curious, I plugged it into my laptop and found a recording I had thought was gone forever. I don’t know exactly when it was recorded and, as always, I’m not entirely satisfied with the quality, or my awful pronunciation and annunciation (due largely to the lingering sinus problems). It’s not a complete episode, either. I suspect that I didn’t invest much effort into finding it because the content is only really interesting as a novelty. The first portion is simply me reading and commenting on atrocities highlighted in Stars & Stripes. There is then a rather looooong segment in which I talk through a repair on a flight-control pallet. I find it horribly boring, but who knows what you folks might enjoy. Hopefully it will still be interesting to you in some way. The only alterations I have done to the original audio are the omission of a last name and an URL, due to privacy concerns and a request from the individual in question and converting it to stereo. I’m not really a fan of posting something this raw and “rough.” I feel, though, that it still belongs here. So, if for some reason you are under the impression that collecting every episode will win you some kind of prize, feel free to download or just listen. I’m sure its place in the order can be easily determined by comparison of events and the timing of my torturous head cold, but I’m too busy working on putting together the new show. Enjoy, folks. Take care of each other and watch your six. Dave “Godless” Kinser

Politics, bare-knuckles style. I use facts and logic to kick right wing butt! Subjects include: U.S. opposition to democracy around the world, GOP voter fraud, right-wing racism, phony right wing Christians doing the opposite of what Jesus said in Matthew 25, the Iraq war, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, George Bush, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, unequal income and wealth distribution. I start where Al Franken and Bill Maher leave off. Plenty of audio clips of all your favorite conservative devils. Wimpy liberals and Democrats who act like Republicans are not spared either. Upcoming will be interviews and listener phone calls. Check it out!

Broken English is a mobile podcast hosted by me, Andrew Mahar in and around Chicago, Illinois. This first season is a mixture of interviews from people who have immigrated to the U.S. ranging from Mexico to South Africa to Turkey to Bolivia. With the Trump administration creating such a negative connotation around the word “Immigrant” now more than ever, immigrants need a voice to share their side of the story. Broken English is here to be that voice.
