    Not About You

    Not About You

    by

    Since Nov 30, 2016 05:52 UTC

Not About You is a podcast about identity and social justice. I’m the producer and host of the show and I wanted to make a show where a white, straight, cis-gendered man (that’s me) connected with folks with different lived experiences from my own about the ways parts of their identities bump up against injustices. We’ll be talking about race, gender, religion, representation, protests, politics, relationships and more. My hope is that this series leads to more conversation and interaction. I want folks who are hesitant or new to standing in these struggles to feel more comfortable showing up for change and asking questions. I want underrepresented voices to have new ways to be amplified and supported. I’ve set up a voicemail line, 612-361-9261, where you can share comments, suggestions and personal stories of your own that may be used in future episodes of the podcast. If you tell me which episode you’re responding to, that will help me make follow up episodes with voicemail responses. Call 612-361-9261 with your questions, comments or stories.

    Understanding Identity – Audio

    by

    Since Mar 11, 2009 00:39 UTC

Who are we? What shapes us into the people we are? Over the last 50 years advances in society and technology has meant that we can be whoever we want to be. Infertile couples have the chance of conceiving a child; a man can become a woman; if an organ fails, you can get a new one. But is it all for the greater good? There are people in today’s society who wouldn’t think twice about putting a patent on our biological and genetic heritage. The tracks on this album discuss issues such as identity, the relationship between the natural and the social sciences, and the colossal topic of ethnicity, especially in the UK. The material forms part of the course DD100, An introduction to the social sciences: understanding social change

Eddie guides fascinating conversations with newsmakers who share their personal histories, their struggles and their triumphs. In listening, we learn to empathize and hopefully experience a few ‘a-ha’ moments for ourselves.

    Double Consciousness

    by

    Since Jan 18, 2018 17:50 UTC

Listen to actors, educators and writers Toussaint and Joetta for their weekly podcast of current events, life in the audition room, and moments of double consciousness. Questioning authority (and sometimes reality) or biting tongues, the duo reports their lives as performers and how they navigate their way as artists. Hailing from Minneapolis, MN (a city and state with some of the highest racial disparity in education and law enforcement), Double Consciousness also explores the W.E.B. DuBois concept of what it means to have a divided identity and be tried by dominant culture politics and social norms. Double Consciousness is part of Urban Home Companion, and is published weekly on iTunes, SoundCloud, and Stitcher.

    Origin Stories

    Origin Stories

    by

    Since Apr 15, 2022 22:29 UTC

Titled “Origin Stories,” this podcast series aims to build transdisciplinary spaces in which to rethink educational practices in order to redress pervasive ideological and methodological biases in Japanese Studies. In this space scholars will discuss their personal background, intellectual formation, experiences in the field, and evolving perspective on Japanese Studies. In this series, we hope to explore the following questions: How can we employ a black feminist framework to unpack the historical forces contributing to the particular racial formations that have congealed within Japanese cultures since the late medieval period, and within postwar Japanese Studies in its deep debt to U.S. imperialism and white supremacy? How have legacies of racism and anti-blackness in the academy hindered scholars of color in their work in Japanese Studies? What new insights can be mined when marginalized members of academia gather to critically consider anti-racist curricula and policies as they reimagine the humanities? For more details, visit our Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy website: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/jsap/podcast/

the only one in the room podcast

the only one in the room podcast

    by

    Since Mar 23, 2019 00:39 UTC

Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.
