Real stories, real people. This one-hour storytelling program is filled with true-life adventures of people past and present from Jonesborough, Tennessee, and the surrounding Southern Appalachian Region. Each program presents stories built around a common theme. All of these stories, which are collected from the hills and hollers, and sometimes up in the Mountains of East Tennessee, are scripted into a show that explores the culture, heritage, and history of these diverse voices. Home to the town of the first Abolitionist Newspaper in the Country. Home to the state that made Women’s Suffrage a reality. Home to Warner Institute, training Freedmen and Women as teachers beginning less than a decade after the end of the Civil War. Surprising, heartwarming, and often hilarious stories of the independent East Tennessee people come to life in this podcast with a voice and accent that can be found nowhere else. Sponsored by: The Tennessee Arts Commission, WETS 89.5 FM, The Town of Jonesborough, The McKinney Center, The Wild Women of Jonesborough, Main Street Cafe and Catering, Nancy Hope and Odie Major

    The Gate of Heaven

    The Gate of Heaven

    by

    Since Mar 21, 2021 22:10 UTC

“The Gate of Heaven” is a weekly podcast of the sermons preached by the Rev’d Charles L. McClean, pastor of Our Saviour Lutheran Church (LCMS) in Baltimore, Maryland. The sermon texts are drawn from the Gregorian/Anglo-Lutheran pericopes of the historic Western One-Year Lectionary, which remains in use in many member congregations of the LCMS. Are you looking for a church home in Baltimore? Are you visiting our fair city and in need of a place of worship while you’re here? Come to Our Saviour Church and hear the fullness of God’s Word proclaimed: Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose for your justification! Come, receive His Body and His Blood, given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. Our Saviour celebrates Holy Communion every Sunday in the historic Lutheran liturgical tradition of the Common Service. As a member congregation of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, she joyfully confesses the prophetic and apostolic Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the inspired and inerrant Word of God, and she adheres without reservation to the Book of Concord of 1580 as being in full accord with the Scriptures. Jubilate, The Third Sunday after Easter April 25, 2021 AD Old Testament: Isaiah 40:25-31 Epistle: 1 Peter 2:11-20 Gospel: John 16:16-22 Click here to listen and subscribe to Pastor McClean’s sermons on iTunes. Yesterday In Travel

    by

    Since Aug 24, 2020 01:56 UTC

Travel is in a weird place. What better time to look back to see how we got here—and where we might go? Each episode, travel industry veterans Brian and Kaleena discuss the big and small moments in travel history that led us to where we are today. Some moments completely rewrote the rules—like the invention of jumbo jets. But we’ll also discuss moments that reflect ongoing trends in travel, like how Disney changed Orlando. In our discussions, we’ll explore how these examples might inform our current state of travel, and the challenges ahead. We’ll talk about everything—domestic politics, electronic music, international relations, new inventions, natural disasters, religious pilgrimages, race, all of it. It’s been a long road. Travel (as we know it) could soon change in a huge way—and it probably should. Our goal is to create a dialogue about the future of travel, and what better way to do that than to look first to the past?

    LitReading – Classic Short Stories

    LitReading – Classic Short Stories

    by

    Since Oct 3, 2018 19:16 UTC

Humans have shared stories for millennia. For most of that time, telling tales was a verbal process. A storyteller would regale an audience with accounts of adventure, bravery, compassion, despair, enlightenment, and fear. Stories were a shared experience, until the advent of inexpensive mass-printing processes in the 19th century which allowed most of us to read to ourselves. Yet, that desire to have a story read aloud is still ingrained in our collective soul. While we still read books for pleasure, most of today’s stories are told via newer forms of visual media like movies and television. Consuming stories via any visual medium requires an active commitment to the process. You probably shouldn’t read a book or watch a TV program while driving, but your brain still craves a good story. An audio book is suitable for a long road trip. But what about those times when you only have a few minutes? Enter the audio short story. Allow me to help you fill those moments and fulfill your need for a captivating tale with readings of some of the world’s greatest literary masters best brief works. My love of the spoken word has been honed by a more than 30-year career in radio and voice acting with a modicum of performance passion from decades of stage performances. This venture is my hobby (I have a great full-time job), so much of the content is free of cost. I hope you enjoy them. If you would like to share thoughts or comments, please drop me a line. If you enjoy these stories, please spread the word, subscribe, and leave a review on your favorite podcast service. Thanks for stopping by, Don McDonald
