    The AskHistorians Podcast

    The AskHistorians Podcast

    by

    Since Dec 20, 2013 19:48 UTC

The AskHistorians Podcast showcases the knowledge and enthusiasm of the AskHistorians community, a forum of nearly 1.4 million history academics, professionals, amateurs, and curious onlookers. The aim is to be a resource accessible to a wide range of listeners for historical topics which so often go overlooked. Together, we have a broad array of people capable of speaking in-depth on topics that get half a page on Wikipedia, a paragraph in a high-school textbook, and not even a minute on the History channel. The podcast aims to give a voice (literally!) to those areas of history, while not neglecting the more commonly covered topics. Part of the drive behind the podcast is to be a counterpoint to other forms of popular media on history which only seem to cover the same couple of topics in the same couple of ways over and over again.

Please rate, review, and subscribe to our channel to help us grow and continue following our passion for tech! Thanks for listening and dropping by! With the recently-announced Apple AirPods Max, we wanted to discuss the history of headphones and how it has played a major role with the way we listen to music. *AirPods Max weighs 13 oz., not 18*

A Short History of England by G. K. Chesterton

A Short History of England by G. K. Chesterton

    by

    Since Oct 10, 2020 00:00 UTC

Gilbert Keith Chesterton was a prolific writer on many topics. His views of history were always from the standpoint of men and their interactions, and it may fairly be said he saw all of history as a battle between civilization and barbarism. So it has always been, and that remains true even today.“But it is especially in the matter of the Middle Ages that the popular histories trample upon the popular traditions. In this respect there is an almost comic contrast between the general information provided about England in the last two or three centuries, in which its present industrial system was being built up, and the general information given about the preceding centuries, which we call broadly mediaeval. “As this quotation taken from the Introduction clearly shows, he is no mere pedant reciting dry dates and locations, but a profound thinker flooding new light onto those modern “myths” that have filled our historys. He is a master of paradox, and the techique of reducing his opponents arguments to the logical absurdity they have inherent in them. He often turns them upside down. All of which makes his work both a sound subject for reflection and highly entertaining all the while it remains permanently timely. More great books at LoyalBooks.com

In This Labyrinth: The Phantom of the Opera In Erik’s Times and Ours

In This Labyrinth: The Phantom of the Opera In Erik’s Times and Ours

    by

    Since Jun 12, 2018 22:00 UTC

This podcast draws on the world’s most popular musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom Of The Opera, as well as on the experience of Phanship having been a Phan myself for three odd decades now, to explore social justice and intersectionality. That said, although a lot of my exploration and analysis comes from the Lloyd Webber stage-musical, I will talk about other versions of Phantom as well, along with some of the best of Phanfiction that I’ve yet come across! And whenever possible, I’ll be interviewing fellow Phans, Phan-authors/creators, etc, to give voice to different experiences than just my own. So enjoy, and long live Phantom as a force for a better world! PSA #SaveTheBrilliantOriginal #PhantomoftheOpera! As folks may know, the London and Broadway flagship productions have been closed due to #COVID19 (read more about it on the podcast blog). So now, we need to make sure that, when they reopen, Hal Prince’s, Gillian Lynn’s and Maria Bjornson’s original vision is preserved! High Crime Pod

    by

    Since Apr 20, 2019 04:32 UTC

Where there’s smoke… there’s true crime. Hi, we’re Kayla and Helayne! And we like true crime. And weed. We’re fans of weed. Look, we all have anxiety, among other health and mental health issues, and who’s to judge what helps you get through this trippy, wild thing we call life, right? For us, weed is medicine, and honestly, it can help you chill tf out and chat about one of your favorite (and yet, macabre) topics without going into a full, anxious meltdown and googling how expensive retractable steel covers for windows are. So whether you smoke or not, join us on this wild ride through murder, mysteries, and maybe even some supernatural goodies. We know it’s a dark topic, but don’t worry, we’ll make you laugh, too. They seem kind of like mutually exclusive topics – true crime and comedy. But who doesn’t love a good comedic relief? We know we do — and we hope to be that for you. Well, hope to chat with you soon. Email info@highcrimepod.com to share your true crime stories, questions, comments, concerns, or even your favorite way to indulge in the devil’s lettuce. Later, buds!

    I Could Live Here

    I Could Live Here

    by

    Since Feb 5, 2019 04:56 UTC

Old houses, old histories, old friends, new takes! In each episode, a house of Notable Repute is discussed, with one amateur house enthusiast (Mindy) sharing her findings with one enthusiastic listener (Deb). From the very glamorous homes of railroad barons, to the kooky DIY efforts of those Arts and Crafters, we’ll take a peek inside them all, and ponder that singular question, “Could we live here?” We’re closing out our season with one of the most iconic buildings in New York. The Chrysler Building in midtown Manhattan was paid for and owned by Walter P. Chrysler, automobile tycoon, and designed by the avant-garde architect of the age, William Van Alen. Hey, it’s not exactly a house but it does have hubcaps as ornamentation! A sky-high Art Deco lunch club! Sneaky spires! Career-ending lawsuits! All that drama and more!
