The Backwoods of Canada by Catharine Parr Traill

The Backwoods of Canada by Catharine Parr Traill

    by

    Since Dec 15, 2023 00:00 UTC

The writer is as earnest in recommending ladies who belong to the higher class of settlers to cultivate all the mental resources of a superior education, as she is to induce them to discard all irrational and artificial wants and mere useless pursuits. She would willingly direct their attention to the natural history and botany of this new country, in which they will find a never-failing source of amusement and instruction, at once enlightening and elevating the mind, and serving to fill up the void left by the absence of those lighter feminine accomplishments, the practice of which are necessarily superseded by imperative domestic duties. To the person who is capable of looking abroad into the beauties of nature, and adoring the Creator through his glorious works, are opened stores of unmixed pleasure, which will not permit her to be dull or unhappy in the loneliest part of our Western Wilderness. The writer of these pages speaks from experience, and would be pleased to find that the simple sources from which she has herself drawn pleasure, have cheered the solitude of future female sojourners in the backwoods of Canada.

Fallen angels. Ancient giants. Demons and monsters. Did giants once rule the earth? Did demigods and monsters like those of Greek mythology actually exist and were worshiped or feared by humankind? And if there’s evidence that supernatural beings are real, what does it mean for us today, for the future, and for the end of the world? Jesus said, ”As in the days of Noah, so it will be when I return.” Join your host Pete Ohlinger and guests as they dive into the historical, the biblical, the supernatural. The Days of Noah Podcast. Uncovering the past. Connecting the present. Discerning the future. All of us must choose a side in this life- Jesus Christ The Infinite, or an inferior and finite god. Choose wisely! The consequences of this choice will last for all eternity. #twopointfivepercent

The Children of the New Forest by Frederick Marryat

The Children of the New Forest by Frederick Marryat

    by

    Since Dec 7, 2023 00:00 UTC

The children of Colonel Beverley, a Cavalier officer killed at the Battle of Naseby are believed to have died in the flames when their house, Arnwood, is burned by Roundhead soldiers. However, they escape and are raised by Joseph Armitage, a gamekeeper in his cottage in the New Forest. The story describes how the children adapt from anaristocratic lifestyle to that of simple cottagers. The children are concealed as the grandchildren of Armitage. Eventually after Armitage’s death, Edward Beverley leaves and works as a secretary for the sympathetic Puritan placed in charge of the Royal land in the New Forest. He then joins the army of the future King Charles II and after the Royalist defeat at the Battle of Worcester, he escapes to France and lives in exile until the Restoration. His brother and siblings continue to live in the New Forest and they are reunited on the King’s return.

History of Science, Ottoman or Otherwise

History of Science, Ottoman or Otherwise

    by

    Since Feb 20, 2016 17:47 UTC

What did it mean to pursue science in the Ottoman Empire? Who practiced it and why? And how should scholars approach the topic today? This series of podcasts introduces new research that challenges the traditional story of science in the Ottoman Empire. Setting aside long-held assumptions of the passive reception of European science or of a golden age stymied by religious obscurantism, these podcasts explore how artisans, scholars, and others made sense of the natural world. Some examine topics and actors traditionally regarded as outside the bounds of science, such as alchemy, while others reveal connections to broader worlds of intellectual exchange. Yet others situate seemingly cerebral sciences like astronomy or medicine in the everyday contexts of religion and charity. Together they reveal a new and vibrant intellectual world that has been too often overlooked.

Do The Math Podcast with Deven Morgan

    by

    Since Jan 4, 2014 16:45 UTC

Telling Seattle stories…long form interviews with the creators, innovators and legends of our Seattle Hip-Hop community. With the pioneering Seattle 2nd wave hip-hop group Tribal Productions our home base, the Do The Math Podcast with Deven Morgan aims primarily to shed light on a often forgotten period of Seattle’s hip-hop history – after Sir Mix-A-Lot and before Macklemore. This critical time produced stacks upon stacks of beautiful music that was criminally under appreciated – both because of a lack of local avenues for exposure in a pre-internet era and also because these artists arose in the shadow of the grunge era. Using the podcast format to allow these artists tell their own stories, the Do The Math podcast strives to provide a venue to tell the world that Seattle has / is / will continue producing the absolute freshest and groundbreaking styles. The world just needs to pay attention.
